click Start>run>regedit to open Registry Editor. and press control+F to
open the find dialogue box and type "usb device" or

Nexxtech 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure (NHDE35)
I'm not saying this will solve all problems, but it solved it for me. I am running Vista and got this to work following someone's instructions from another forum.
The slot in the enclosure that you plug the hard drive into has one set of holes fewer than the hard drive has pins. This means you can plug the hard drive in two ways "left" and "right" if you will. I had to plug my hard drive in so that the unused pins were farthest from the power cable that plugs into the hard drive.
Incidentally this made the screw holes line up better, too.

Seems most likely that the drive enclosure has failed, since swapping to a different HD made no difference. If so enclosure will have to be repaired, or replaced.

If this is a new drive, you will need to format it before it will show up in My Computer.
To do so, start by right-clicking on My Computer, then choose Manage from the menu. Click on Disk Management, you should see a list of drives in your system. Your new drive will show up as unallocated space, right-click on that and choose New Partition, choose the size of the partition you want, and choose to format it.
Once the partitioning and format process is complete, the drive should show up in My Computer under a new drive letter.

Open hard drive enclosure
(I found your question because I had the same question. Decided to go for it.)
The aluminum top and bottom covers are held in place by the indentations on the sides which fit into channels on the plastic chassis inside.
I used a flat knife blade to gently pry by the front end of one side until the cover moved moved slightly out of the channels, then switched to the other side. Once I had it started, I was able to just lever the cover off by grasping the front corners and swinging it up in the reverse motion of the installation procedure.
Caution: Prying too hard or far at once will bend the covers and or nick the plastic chassis extrusion.
Good luck

Try your NexxTech on some other computer, to verify that it still works.
Try some other USB port on your computer.
Try some other USB device into the same USB port that you are trying to use for your NexxTech, to make sure that your computer's USB ports are working correctly.
Check that Windows 7 has loaded the device-drivers for your USB 2.0 ports on your computer's motherboard.

Computer recognises usb connection briefly and
This generally means you have a failed USB controller board or a failed drive inside the enclosure.
Try removing the hard drive from the shell and transferring it into a new external enclosure. If this works you're done, if not the fault is in the drive. I can offer you some advice on DIY methods or direct you to a professional lab near you if you provide your location.
Hope this helps FixYa,

I also had a problem with XP not recognizing the hard drive. The USB Mass Storage Device was reporting a Code 10 (Device cannot start). Ryockey provided the solution in that the drive pins can be offset by one set when connected to the interface. Be careful to get the pins aligned correctly, it worked for me. I also have my drive jumper set for Master. Thanks Robert!

HARD DRIVE ENCLOSURE RECOGNITION BY MY PC PROBLEM
Had the same problem today. I finally noticed that the pin bay on the enclosure was large enough to allow the pins to be offset by one pin set. The open pins were hidden by wires. Once I carefully aligned the pins, everything worked fine.
