Nexxtech wireless mouse Model 2616561 that won't

If you have tried it on another computer and its still failing then sorry but most likely the mouse is stuffed. Buy a new one. Go for Logitech, its the best brand for reliability.

How to turn off the mouse when travelling or when not in use without taking of the batteries?

Unless that mouse has a switch to turn it off...no luck, but an alternative is to take a piece of note paper or thin plastic and open your mouse to the batteries and push a little piece of the paper or thin plastic in between either of the batteries and its end metal contact and there you have it! To get it up an running just pull out the paper or plastic!

Mouse works for a few

This has worked for others:
First, power off the mouse, then push on the green-lit button on the transmitter that you plug into your USB. (It doesn't feel too much like a button but you will see that it starts flashing.) Hold it down for about 15 seconds. Then power on your mouse and you will see that it should start working.
