How do I transfer data from my hard drive to added external drive

you can this many different ways. The most straightforward is to go to the drive and select "folder and file options" in the view menu and selct "show hidden files", that way when you copy and paste you will get every single file. The other way is to use a program such as Acronis Tru Image and use the clone option. I am assuming that you want an image of your C:\ drive.

Trying to format for MAC

I had a similar issue and was able to work around it by partitioning the drive. See this site for information: http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/partitioning_tiger.html

Overview: Open Disk Utility, Click on the Drive, Click Partition, Choose the number of partitions, and click Apply.

(It's written for video editors, but is applicable in your situation)

Let me know if this helps!

Seagate freeagent keeps dropping disconnecting

Seagate manufactures both internal and external hard drives, and their sleep modes can be managed in different ways. The hard drive is one of the top energy consumers among computer-hardware components, and Windows operating systems support options to reduce power consumption. Internal hard drives are typically turned off and stop spinning ("sleep" mode) after a certain period of system inactivity. However, the system usually takes longer to come back when the hard drive's sleep mode is activated. Furthermore, turning off hard drives may result in failure of some constantly running applications. Windows includes options to turn off sleep modes for internal hard drives, and external hard drives can be managed using a utility program. Log in to an administrator account and click the "Start" button in the lower left corner of the screen. Click "Control Panel" and then "Systems and Maintenance." b> Click on "Power Options." Open "Change plan settings" under your current power plan. Note "Radio button" is selected for the current plan. Click "Change advanced power settings." Expand the entry "hard drive" by clicking on the "+" sign. Click on "+" to expand the entry "Turn off hard disk after." Select "Never" for this option and click "OK." b> In Windows XP Log in to an administrator account and click the "Start" button in the lower left corner of the screen. Click "Control Panel" and switch to the "Category" view on the left panel. Then click on "Performance and Maintenance." Click on "Performance and Maintenance" and open "Power Options." The select the tab "Power Schemes." Using drop-down list, set the option "Never" for "Turn off hard drives." Click "OK." b> Using "NoSleepHD" for External Hard Drives b> Click on the "NoSleepHD program" link in Resources. Click "I Agree" and save the program (as a zip file) on your computer. Open a folder where you have saved the file using Windows Explorer. Right-click on the zip file and select "Extract All." Then click "Extract" to get the program file "NoSleepHD v1.0.exe." Double-click on the program (.exe) file to execute NoSleepHD. Click "Select External Hard Drive" in the Program menu and choose your Seagate external hard drive. Choose "10 minutes" under the option "Write File every" and click "Start NoSleep Mode." The program will write an empty string every 10 minutes to the Seagate hard drive and prevent it from going into sleep mode. Hope this helps. b>

I have a freeagent go

yes it is possible. First you can use a partition software. The second is using the disk management tools, these are the steps.

1.To run Disk Management Tool, click on Start, right-click My Computer, and select Manage from the menu that appears. When you see the Computer Management window, click the Disk Management item listed underneath the Storage heading. You then see the main Disk Management pane in the right side of the Computer Management window.

2.Creating the partition: Unallocated space appears as an Unknown Partition in the Disk Management diagram, you can use it to create a new partition in some or all of the space. To create your new partition, you need to right-click on the part of the diagram that represents the unallocated space, the unallocated space has a black stripe running along the top and then choose the "New Partition" on the menu that appears. To create your new logical drive in an extended partition that has free space The free space has a light green strip along the top, right-click on the free space then choose New Logical Drive from the menu that appears. Now you will see the New Partition Wizard.

The Partition Wizard will asks you to specify the following:

1 The Type - Primary, extended, or logical partition. Your hard drive can contain up to four primary partitions, or three primary partitions and one extended partition. Choose the primary partition if you are created a partition in which you will install an operating system (this is unusual situation). Choose extended if you plan to create several logical partitions within it. The logical partition type is available only if you choose to create the new partition in an extended partition with some free space.

2 The Size - You may use the entire available space, or leave room for more partitions. The Partition Wizard will displays the minimum and maximum size for the partition, this is based on the space where it will be stored

3 The Drive letter or path - Two operating system on your computer. You may select any unused letter, but the wizard will offer the next available drive letter. To Mount in the following empty NTFS Folder, you need an NTFS partition with a drive letter on the same machine. You may select the "Do Not Assign A Drive Letter Or Drive Path" option, this will let Windows assign a letter later, usually the default drive letter.

4 The File system - The default is NTFS (recommended), but you can use FAT32 (not recommended) as well. Both NTFS and FAT32 will efficiently utilize disk space on large drives.
Note: NTFS has better security features, the better recovery capabilities after a major crash, and has file-level compression built in. NTFS will also give you the option of enable compression.

5 The Label - Type a name for the partition, name it something that will indicating what you will use it for, data files, my files, fatboy one, etc.

I hope this solution was helpful.

The usb connector on my 500 gb seagate mseries is broken

There are 2 other solutions to this problem.
First way is to find someone that has the other module P/N 100452909 Dual FireWire 400 and use FireWire instead.
Second is to pry open the USB module and have the USB connector re-soldered or replaced. The connector is similar to many of the smart phones, so a cell phone repair shop could probably replace it. Heck you might even have the connector replaced with the newer Micro USB connector or ask them to solder the USB wire direct to the interface board.

Cannot read the hard disk

Figure out whether you need a hardware or software fix.

Look for grinding sounds from your drive or humming that starts or stops.

These are signs that the actuator arm and discs are no longer in alignment and your drive is timing out.

If it seems as though nothing is wrong with your hard drive, it's probably time for a software fix.

Run one of the many software fixes, if you think the problem is related to software.

These programs feature on-screen directions, making it easy for you to progress through them.

If this works, you don't need to fix a physical problem.

Remove the many tiny screws that holds the drive together.

Eventually, you'll get to the innards of your drive.

Be very careful not to bend or force a piece to go where it doesn't want to.

Determine if you've set things straight.

Look to see whether anything was loose inside your external hard drive.

If you have recently dropped it or traveled with it, it is possible that something came loose.

Also check that all the arms and platters are straight and do not appear bent in any way.

If they are bent, straighten them with your hands or pliers.

Put everything back together and check that everything in your external hard drive is working properly.

Try using the external hard drive on another computer.

click start control panel administrative tools computer management device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you could see a yellow question / exclamation mark? ! or a red X

you will need to update/reinstall drivers right click to reinstall drivers

if you can see your usb but its not working ports(com&lpt)right click update driver

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again

if you can see your usb drive but its not working

ports (com&lpt) right click update driver if this fails to fix the problem

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red white green black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems to a computer and its parts

if it still cant be detected or If the hard drive that has failed is the same one that you are trying to recover from might the reason that you are getting this error.

This could be an issue where the part of the hard drive you are trying to access is corrupt and not accessible which would explain the reason that it would let you access the other partition.

Now I have seen cases where Malware can break the link of a Hard Drive.

So let's try a couple of steps.

Let's go back in to "Disk Management"

Lets right click on the partition that you are not able to access and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths"

Now try selecting a new Drive Letter.

This will restore the path if it has been broken.

There are also Data Recovery programs that might be very helpful to recover your important information.

or if its a usb external drive you might need a usb 3 card installed on your computer your computer might not have enough usb output power

USB 3 card will provide more power when needed to the device to gain maximum throughput and conserve power when the device is connected but is idling

Seagate freeagent go

It is a better job to extend the partition with 3rd party partition software, you do no to do much effort and then you could achieve the goal, and there are several free partition software that could achieve this goal without data loss like AOMEI Partition Assistant, Gparted live CD and so on, i prefer Aomei, it is much friendly than Gparted and the Diskpart commond.

Seagate 500gb Free Agent Ex Hard Drive - Class Action siut

DO NOT buy a Seagate freeagent drive under any condition if it comes as a gift return it or re-gift to some one you don't like. Like so many others my 500GB external drive just quit working. Has only been plugged in about 6 times and then back into a cabinet to keep safe. In 10 years between 2 workstations 3 laptops and 4 external drives. The only drives that have ever gone bad are the Seagates and newer Maxators. I still have 4 Western digital drives that still work and get used in an external case for back up. They have never failed. Seagate should be responsible for data time and mental anguish.

Dismantle seagate freeagent usb external drive case

Unplug your Seagate from the computer and place it on a sturdy surface.

Turn the drive on its side and insert the tip of your knife or screwdriver in the seam where the side panel meets the body of the drive.

Work your way around the sides of the panel until all of the internal securing clips are released.

Repeat Step 3 on the opposite side of the drive and gently pry up the top panel of the drive until it separates, revealing the metal hard disk assembly inside

Lift the assembly out of the drive and remove the screws from each corner of the metal frame around the actual hard disk.

Remove the frame from the hard disk.

Seagate Free Agent Problem

i have the exact same problem... not sure what caused it... there was a massive power spike here, and that could be it... of cource most of the electronics fried by that do not even turn on, while that turns on just fine and flashed the yellow light...

the drive sounds fine itself, so the problem is most likely in the Seagate FAP case itself, probably the internal circuitry, as when i turn it on the drive spins up normally and does not make and noises that are the tell-tale signs of a dead drive... my suggesgion would be to crack open the Seagate case (i know i know, i thought it looked nice to, but would you rather have all your data or a nice-looking doorstop) and take the hard drive out, then connect it either 1) directly into your computer or 2) into another external hardrive case. As this hard drive has eSATA, it is probibly a safe bet that it is a SATA drive, so that's probibly the connection you need. Again, i have not tried this, but i will attempt it soon... what's the worst that can happen? my drive will not work inside the case, my drive will not work outside the case... same thing really... but this is the last time i buy seagate...

Dead Freeagent 500GB Drive...

I don't know which drives they use in Freeagent, or even how you open the case (don't remember seeing any screws on mine), but Seagate drives (baraccuda especially) are known to have a weakness with the diode between 12V and Ground.

If it seems like it's shorting, (put a meter across the power input before you bother opening it - if it's reading about 1 Ohm, this may be your issue) might be worth opening the case and checking for a small square surface-mount diode marked BUX C??? (? being a variable number). If it's shorted, then clip it out for a quick-and-dirty backup of your data & bin the drive, or fix with a suitable replacement diode (SMD 1N4004 has been suggested).
