If the main power button LED is flashing or solid yellow, this could indicate a hardware problem.

Was it running good before?

Are the diagnostic LED lights all green?

Here is what dell says:

If the power light is blinking amber  —

The computer is receiving electrical power, but an internal power problem might exist.

  • Ensure that the voltage selection switch is set to match the AC power at your location (if applicable).
  • Ensure that the processor power cable is securely connected to the system board.

Do you remember what the BSOD said?

I have a dell optiplex gx620 that won't turn on?!

My optiplex was used when I purchased it, it's got a pentium D 2.33 ghz. The power supply is working perfectly, I just put a new one in..... previously the auxilery power light had gone fritzy and began blinking amber constantly. The USB ports are undamaged and clean, the computer was working perfectly for over a year. Hard drive is booting fine in a seperate machine. No cords disconected or malfunctioning as far as I can tell, but when I push the power button, nothing happens. I'm wondering if it's the CMOS battery but it doesn't seem to make sense to me.... Though it's possible. Is it possible the power button BROKE? The only light on the machine with a working power supply previously tested, and retested on a seperate machine, is the auxilery power light on the motherboard. It's steady amber. I unplugged all RAM and reinstalled each seperately, trying all 4 slots. Nothing works, all components are factory, on board equipment. This is the form factor case. My email address is [email protected], please respond as soon as possible thank you.

Dell Optiplex GX620 has a failure power supply. A some of the capacitors inside it are poor quality :( .In this case is an emergency procedure to start power supply (ie. for backup) : make a temporary shortcut between green and black wire in main mo-bo connector (24 wires) , and use normal Power On button. When main fan starts remove temporary shortcut.

Want to restore Optiplex GX620 to factory settings

I have an Optilplex GX 620 and recently started having major performance issues. It's to the point now that I can't load IE, run AV, or make any progress in troubleshooting due to these issues. I also have a Dimension 4700C where I've pressed Ctrl-F11 during boot up and I was able to restore to factory default settings. This does not work for the GX620 and I was wondering if someone knew if this was possible for this type of computer?

a clean installation

it is recommended to this service at least
once every 8 months, it wipes all your hard
drive from data, programs, bugs, errors and viruses
this will 100% solve your problem guaranteed.

for xp or vista, insert the installation disk
to be cleared you don’t need a specific disk made to your computer
if your coa says “Microsoft xp home or pro” then any windows home or pro
cd will do this the same apply to vista. So buy, borrow or download any OEM
not pirate version of the original operating system that is specified in your
Windows sticker. The oem cds can be found on ebay they should cost less
Than $10 or £10 do not buy the license version because your already have
The license underneath the laptop. “coa” is the sticker with the serial number
Which will be asked for in the middle of the installation.

restart the computer and a message will
come up asking to press any key to boot
from cd. once you do that "i mean you press a key"
then a blue screen will load then asks you
to press Enter to install xp.

1. press enter
2. select the partion and press enter
3. select continue "it warns you to delete files"
4. select format "quick"
5. now let it do the rest and follow instructions
6. when the installation is finished you'll notice
its like new again, some computers will need
drivers which you can get from manufacturer
website. download and install them.

that's it but for a detailed information click here

Dell OptiPlex GX620 starts up then shuts down repeatedly

I have a Dell OptiPlex GX620 mini tower with a Celeron processor, 2GB RAM and 320GB SATA hard drive. The problem is when I press the start button, everything starts up (green lights, fans and all) then shuts back down within 30 seconds. I have changed the RAM, hard drive, CMOS battery and nothing has helped. What could the problem be?

Try this: remove the DMOS battery and unplug the on/off switch plug. It's the one in the corner near the power supply. To be sure follow the cable from the front on/off switch board on back to this plug. Then plug the A/C cord in, if the system boots up fine, then replace the front panel power on/off swith board. Naturally you will not be able to power off the computer using the power switch (since we unplugged it), so you will have to just pull the plug. Hope this helps. Joe

Error: Cannot Display This Video Mode

I have just had XP re-installed on my Dell Optiplex GX620. I have connected my computer to my Dell Flat Panel display (Model: E151FPB) and as Window boots I get the error message ''Cannot Display This Video Mode''. I have checked the Dell tech Support web site http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/document?c=us&l=en&s=gen&dn=FA1079260 and tryed the recommended fix of turning the display off for 15 secs (both the power button and unplugging the mains power cable). This has not worked and I still have the problem.

You may have to boot into safe mode and reset the video settings to a safe setting like 1024x768.

  1. To get into safe mode, continuously press F8 while the computer is booting up.
  2. Eventually you will get a Windows XP Boot Menu.
  3. Choose the option for Safe Mode.
  4. Go to Start, Control Panel and double-click Display.
  5. On the Settings tab, drag the slider bar to 1024x768.
  6. Click OK
  7. Shut down and reboot.
If the problem goes away, then you are good. Otherwise, you'll have to boot menu again (F8) and choose Enable VGA Mode.

Could be a bad power supply, bad motherboard, bed device such as a disk drive dragging your system down, or a bad card plugged into the motherboard. Easiest thing is to remove devices such as PCI cards and hard drives one at a time to see if the problem clears. If it doesn't, continue on at your own risk.

If your handy with a multimeter, you can make some checks to see if your power supply is good. Read below:

You have to determine if the power supply is good or the motherboard or some other device is bad.

You will need a voltmeter/multimeter and some experience in reading voltages. If you are unsure, quit now and take it to a professional so you don't shock yourself. Continue on at your own risk.

Using your meter set to DC, and computer on and opened, find your molex connector for any drive bay. Google Molex if your unsure what they look like. Then read Yellow to Ground -should be +12VDC. Read Red to Ground -should be +5VDC. If your not sure what ground is, you should NOT be doing this. Continue on at your own risk!

If these voltages are good, your PS is PROBABLYgood, and you can hook up the motherboard and hard drive. If your unit powers up fine reconnect every remaining device until the bad device is inserted and the problem returns. If your power supply did not read good then read below:

Your power switch on the front of the machine gets connected to the power supply via motherboard. The main power connector at the motherboard passes a momentary "short" signal to the power supply to turn it on. You need to recreate this event with a paperclip.

Another way to isolate whether your power supply is bad, you must disconnect the power supply from ALL other devices.

Then disconnect the AC input power from the back of the power supply.

Then you can use a paperclip to jumper ANY green wire to black wire on the largest plastic connector that you disconnected from the motherboard. Insert the paperclip with everything unplugged and stand back.

Once you are clear from the unit. Plug in AC power from wall to back of power supply and see if the fans start up on the power supply. If they start then half of your supply should be good. Re-read your DC voltages at molex to verify other half.

Hook up devices one at a time to see if they do their power up routine with motherboard UNHOOKED. You should hear drives spinning and see lights flashing. You do not need to whole computer reassembled for this part to work. If all devices are hooked up and seem ok, then your motherboard is bad.

Dell optiplex GX620 loud processor fan noise

Dell optiplex GX620 loud processor fan noise like a vaccum. I upgraded to windows 7 and also upgraded to 4gb of ram and a new hd video card as well as a 1tb hd. I bought 4 more gbs of ram but windows wouldn't start when i installed it. the fan is really loud.

I don't think you can install 8gb of ram into that desktop. If the processor fan is too loud check it for dust or any other obstructions. If there aren't any try replacing the fan - it could be a bearing in the fan.

One of your memory chips is bad.

Maybe your memory is bad or the memory slot is bad.

Remove the Power Cord, Open the Case and remove one of the memory chips. Set the chip aside then try rebooting the computer. If it boots, then you know the memory chip you set aside is bad so mark an x on it with an ink pen. If it fails to boot then move the chip to the next memory slot and try rebooting. If it fails take the chip out and set it aside, then put the other chip in and try booting it in both slots. If it boots, just to verify that the chip set aside is bad, mark an x on it and put it into the open memory chip slot and try booting.

Diagnostic Lights caution.gif CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions located in the Product Information Guide. To help you troubleshoot a problem, your computer has four lights labeled "1," "2," "3," and "4"on the front or back panel. The lights can be off or green. When the computer starts normally, the patterns or codes on the lights change as the boot process completes. When the computer starts normally, the patterns or codes on the lights change as the boot process completes.
