Transferring Win 7 from laptop to external

You cant do that. The only thing I have seen and tried is to create an image of Windows 7 on a thumb drive, and it was not an easy task. I suggest to get an external DVD drive, plug it into the PC and install. . . . . . . . Hey wait a minute!, I just noticed "my PC has a DVD player only". if its a DVD player and not a CD player, it will read the Windows 7 DVD, you may have to change the Boot Priority setting for the PC to boot from DVD before booting from the hard drive.

Unable to install Win 7

the drawer motor being out is just an annoyance, it has nothing to do with reading the disk; it may be used for years that way with no problem. As for the Win 7 DVD. It will NOT work in a CD-only drive, has to be a DVD-drive for obvious reasons....it's a DVD. Did you set the BIOS to boot from the DVD drive first ?

Did you replace the hard drive? It is quite possible there is an issue with the drive at that age. YOu could try an application called "SpeedFan" or "HD Tune" and run a S.M.A.R.T test on it. This will help you determine the drive status. You can run a benchmark with "Hd Tune" and determine the speed of the drive. If you want to post your results, I will certainly help out further.

How do I change native resolution on HP Pavilion a1120n when the choices in the display window don't match the recommended setting for my monitor?

If you cannot change the screen resolution then most likely the wrong video driver was installed.Check the make and model of the graphics card and install the driver.

my best suggestion to you would be to to the motherboard manufacturer, as the hp support site doesnt offer a driver for audio in the list for your model using xp. more than likely the chipset for the audio is realtek. you can go to realtek.com and allow the site to detect any chipset drivers you may need .

I suggest you install an AGP video card that suits your requirements. If you play games that require a powerful graphics card, then I recommend the G Force range of graphics cards. A computer shop can recommend to you a graphics card depending upon what programs you are running on your computer. The games programs usually recommends a graphic card with their games.
Don't forget to disable/turn off the on-board graphics card in the BIOS if you use an external graphics card.
