Purchase either a new VGA-VGA cable, or if your PC has a white DVI-D socket, a DVI-DVI cable, both relatively cheap options and test this simple option before any further troubleshooting. Many computers and monitors will go to sleep (automatically switch off) after not being used after an adjustable period of time. If this is your problem, you will need to adjust the setting (in power options of both the monitor and PC) to a setting suitable to your usage. You can also, in power options, usually turn off "automatic sleep".
