The sound detector section in your tV is faulty. It is composed of an IC, which filters out sound from the brodcasts or any RF signal we feed to it. The sound output secion has no trouble at all, that is why you can heare sound when you inserted and played a VHS tape. For tape playing this section is not needed, and it will be switched OFF when we play a tape. It will get energised only when any RF signal is fed trough its tuner. This IC should be repaced along with the sound detection crystal. It is really a skilled job, not a user repairable one. You have to open the TV, and have to pull out the main board for repair. Must have a sond knowledge in electronics and proper measuring equipments. OK.

The remote not responding is due to either the remote control not working or the sensor that's in the TV is not receiving and understanding the signals. This can be checked. Normally the remote control handset sends its infrared emission. There is an infrared light emitting diode, in front of your remote control handset from which infrared light rays are send to your TVs infrared sensor, fitted inside it, behind the infrared window on its front panel. Infrared rays are invisible to human eye. We can check if it is there by using a mobile phone with camera option. Use the mobile phone in camera mode, and place your remote control's LED side towards its lens, for about a feet away or so, and when you push its each button, you can see an image in the phones' screen. If it is there, and still you're TV don't work with remote control, TVs infrared sensor inside is faulty, and needs replacement. If there is no infrared image from your remote control, you have to buy one new remote control. Please get back to us if you have further query else please accept the suggestion.

Adaptor broke off
It wolud require a new tuner as trying to fix this part back in normally does not last or if the end tag piece is too short to re-solder back on then the part needs replaced. You could try getting a local repair shop to give you an estimate on the cost before condeming the TV.
Is there a headphone jack on the sharp 13" combo?
Its probably only an audio video IN and you will not be able to get any AUDIO output.
There is an Y adapter you can get at radio shack that takes left and right audio and forms a headphone jack. ($10?)
Unless there is an output on the back, it should be listed as an "out", this would work. This output is used for surround sound systems.
