I have a Hitachi Ultravision

Actually if the light stays on most of the set inside is still on-----

You have one of the three mechanical relays on the power board that is locked down, they are on the board the power cord goes to.

In this situation what I used to do is with the red light on CAREFULLY remove the back cover and with the plastic or wood handle of a screw driver tap on the power board, if the red light goes out one of the relays is bad.

If you find this the best way is to replace all three relays, fairly simple to remove board and each only has four solder connections.

Before you rate this solution if you have questions let me know first.

The picture has a green tint to it.

If the green is all dominating then it is the red or yellow that is missing in the spectrum. The likely problem is that one of your color guns has burned out. good news is they can be replaced but you have to determine if you have three individual color guns, or one that projects all three colors. (don't skip the easy analysis first though) Check your cables to make sure they are not worn, cut, nicked and most certainly check to see that they are plugged all the way in. Try jiggling the red and yellow inputs while someone watches the screen to see if it flickers. If it does you could just need a new cable. Swapping it out with a known working cable also will work for testing.

Sometimes it comes on and

This is one of the most common signs of a failing main power supply, the failure likely due to cheap electrolytic capacitors. These components can vary greatly in quality and if the cheapest are used in certain circuits, that can cause them to lose capacitance and gain in unwanted impedance until they can no longer fulfill their purpose.
Unless you want to learn a new trade, I would recommend you locate the supply inside your set, this shouldn't be too hard, these will have larger than average-sized parts, be on a separate board and visibly related to the incoming AC.
Hitachi will likely still have replacement power supplies for sale or possibly repaired supplies on an exchange basis. If you must buy new, don't toss the original as these can be repaired by most competent techs and if they are honest, the cost should not be too high (under $50 US) as I have personally repaired many hundreds of this type at prices of $35-60 US.
These boards are usually made by outside suppliers and just plugged into Hitachi's product with plugs that defy cross-connecting so you should be able to unplug the old and plug in the new, saving the labor cost. If you feel unsure after seeing the guts of your set, just take a number of photos before disconnecting anything.
You may be able to buy a 'pull' (removed from a scrapped set) for less than new but you can't know if a supply is approaching the same state as your own.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture still there but sceen so dim you can

Hi,
Dim picture is an indication that the bulb is near to its end. The bulb is in the peak burning life. You have to replace the bulb to back the unit to its normal picture. Replacing is not quite technical, it is connected to the ballast board with a couple of wires. Part no. is listed in the bulb itself.
Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

I have had a Hitachi

This is not possible without mis-aligning the tubes or un-doing nearly 100 cables. You would also need to cut the cabinet of the tv in half. I'm sorry for the bad news, but you can't disassemble a big screen tv. If height is a factor. turn it on its' side (your height will be half of the original)
