Error message U61. self check not completeing.
U61 is a fault with the DVD-RAM drive and its associated digital controller board (the little circuit board underneath the drive - the DVD drive is connected to this). It's a common fault, can be expensive, but if you truly want this to work, you can submit your unit to an authorised Panasonic DVD service centre, obtain a quote, and a second opinion (on what the problems are and what's involved along with costs), then you can make a firm decision afterwards whether to go ahead with the repair or not. Up to you, these are great units, when they fully work, but the DVD-RAM drive is always a problem, as it fails within a short period of time; however, it is not unfixable, nor should you need to buy a new unit (this model and its variation has a digital tuner - worth keeping).
If you have some sort of warranty, such as extended manufacturer warranty, you can take advantage of it and get it all fixed free of charge. If not, it will cost you; you might be lucky in terms of the digital PCB, but you may still be up for expensive replacement of the DVD-RAM drive, but if that's what you want to do (getting it fixed by a qualified technician), then get the abovementioned quote/second opinion FIRST. This way you have total peace of mind and you will know where you stand with this unit. I do not recommend that you open the unit up to inspect the DVD drive, especially if you still have a warranty of any kind, as that will void it. I strongly recommend the service centre, get a professional hands-on opinion (the unit in front of you and the expert behind counter - face to face), and go from there. Good luck.
You should hopefully not need to buy a new unit. As I said, these are great units when they fully work, and the digital tuner is a bonus. Worth pursuing.
