You might want to open up your device manager on your xp computer and click on network adapters and double click on your nic and copy down the settings under the advanced tab then do the same on the Windows 7 machine and change the values to the same on the Wnds 7 nic adapter.

Check speed settings in BIOS, make sure that the sticks are the correct voltage for your motherboard. If the specs are correct, try a program like memtest86. the only thing to be aware of is the voltage cannot exceed that required for the laptop . for example if the solar panel puts out 12 volts you will need an adaptor before the usb connection to reduce the power to the voltage for the laptop
