Gateway MD2614u Notebook Questions & Answers
Power button
The button is going bad. If you are luck it is just dirty. You can try cleaning it with electrical contact cleaner. It comes in an aerosol can. You can buy it at many electronics or auto part stores.
Be careful with it though, because it is mineral spirit based and could harm plastics, clothing, etc... if you spray it where it doesn't belong.
If that doesn't work...you are kinda out of luck. The button is wearing out. The cost of repair would be steep if the computer isn't under warranty. You would probably need a whole new motherboard. I would try and use the power button as little as possible...let the computer sleep instead of shutting it off.

I searched gateway's website but they're pretty tight lipped about their service guides. I did find this link to some pdf files, even though it's not your exact model, you might find some useful info there. Hope this helps and good luck. Md2614u gateway LOUD BEEPS
Hello dhbbq,
A laptop making beep sounds when powered up usually has a problem with the RAM on the motherboard. Sometimes it is the hard drive but difficult to know at this time. Please supply a update in the add a comment section below. Let us know what happened, I.E. spill liquid, power surge or other conditions that led up to your machine not coming on.
Push start button on gateway laptop md2614u
Hello Howard,
It has been my experience that the switches that are used on a laptop motherboard are a switch called a membrane switch. This type of switch is made of a elastic cover over a spring assembly. The problem with these switches is that the spring or elastic cover do weaken over use and time. The only cure is to replace the switch. On a motherboard it is less expensive to replace the machine unless you have the technical ability to replace the switch it's self. And that may not be all. Some switch assemblies may have more then 5 switches in the assembly. They can be very difficult to repair. If a electronics repair shop in your area reputes it's self as a component level repair then it might be worth a try. Be advised that there probably will be a check out fee that is paid up front. We hope that this helps you.
Gateway md2614 shuts down
Shutdown issues can occur for different reasons besides
overheating. If it IS heat, then it
could be that your vents are clogged with dust.
Used compressed air and blow into the areas on the bottom and the sides
that look like grills for air flow. I'd
try this first.
Another reason for shutdowns could be a bad connecting AC
cord alongside a failing battery. If you
laptop is always plugged in, then the battery can lose its ability to hold a
charge. If you're AC tip wiggles too
much when plugged in, it could be a broken DC-in jack which may not be worth
the repair as they are usually soldered to the motherboard.
Easiest way to see if the AC is the issue is to remove
the battery and gently wiggle the cord to see if it powers off from the movement. Also if the AC cord is twisted up too much it can cause a break in the cable. Examine the cord length and see if you have any bulges, or even cat or dog bites.
Laptop shut down
Sounds like it is getting too hot. Does it feel real hot when it shuts down?
Is the fan and power supply working well and unobstructed so they get good air circulation?
