Hi,

To my knowledge, fuel indicator light in a Toyota Corolla would come on if the tank has about 6 liters left (reserve). Depending on your driving style, A/T or conventional transmission, engine and vehicle condition terrain, road, traffic and weather conditions this would translate to a probable maximum of 80 kms or even less.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Hi,

The amount of mile that you can drive after your gas light comes on differs from car to car. Most cars have around 2 gallons in the reserve tank. Generally you should be able to go 50 miles after the gas light comes on, but that's pushing it. Of course sometimes you can go much more, but that depends on the type of driving you are doing (city or highway, is it a flat road & the condition of your car).

Sediments sink to the bottom of the gas tank & I don't like the thought that these get sucked into my engine, I think you would like to avoid as much as possible replacing your cars engine.

Calculate the size of your reserve tank

1) Read the car manual.
2) The moment your light comes on, fill the tank to the very top, now subtract the number of gallons you filled from the size of your gas tank, and you have the size of your reserve tank.

If you like adventures, and you know your car mpg, the moment the light comes on, bring your trip meter to zero, & drive the car till it comes to a stop. Now you know both the estimated miles you can go on your reserve tank & you can calculate its size. Make sure you have a can of gas in your trunk, to fill up after the car stops. This is the least recommended solution.

I don't recommend pushing it beyond 50 miles after the gas light comes on.

All the best.

If you stick your finger in the gas tank and wiggle it around, it will trick the car sensors into thinking there is more gas and you can drive for a 100 miles. Hope this helps

It has 2 possible solutions 1) fuel sending unit is going bad which the tank has to be dropped to change, 2) you have a bad cluster panel. Hope this helps

Check engine light stays on

The 'check engine' light comes on when almost anything goes wrong, from a loose gas cap to computer systems; low fluid levels to a bad catalytic converter. A common problem is the gas cap not screwed on correctly. This has an easy remedy. Screw the cap off and then carefully seat it and screw it back on until you hear it click. Then drive the car for at least 100 miles. If the light goes out that was the problem.
If the light stays on then you must take it in to be checked by special equipment because that is the only way to isolate the problem.
In my own experience of the light coming on 3 times, there were 3 different reasons: 1) loose gas cap, 2) bad catalytic converter needed replacing [the most expensive unless under warranty] and 3) a bad gas cap that needed replacing. After all 3 instances, the light went out.
I hope it's only a gas cap issue for you. Good luck.

When the gas light comes on how much gas do i have left in the tank?

Hi:
I am pretty sure that the light comes on when you have approx 1/8 tank left. In my honda, with a 12 gallon tank, that equated out to 1.5 gallons, or approx 45 driving miles on flat land in the city. Of course, you should check your average miles per gallon with your driving style , as well as filling the tank once the light comes on, to see how many gallons are left, and you will have an accurate number!

Take a gallon or two gas can with you. When your light comes on, mark the miles, then drive till it dies. This is how many miles you can go.

How many more miles do you have when the fuel light comes on?

Depends on a lot of factors:

1. Gas mileage of your vehicle. If you get excellent gas mileage, 50 MPG +, you can go quite a way. But with a 98 GMC Jimmy, you're probably getting 19 MPG at the best.

2. How you drive your vehicle. The gas mileage means nothing if you are street racing and redlining your vehicle through every gear with the low fuel light on. You definitely won't make it very far like that!

3. The make and model of vehicle. There is no set national standard for when the low fuel light illuminates on a vehicle, so they vary greatly anywhere from half a gallon remaining to 2 gallons remaining. In newer vehicles, the ECU actually takes into account how you drive the vehicle and what speeds you typically go as to when to turn on the low fuel light.

For your specific application, I would say it comes on when you have roughly 1 to 2 gallons left which means that as long as you are driving in a fuel conserving manner you can probably make it about 30 miles or so before you'll be running on fumes. But that should be plenty of time to find a gas station right?!

Hope this helps!
