SOURCE: What is the proper valve

.004"-.006" on both Intake and Exhaust. Better a bit loose then tight.

My 04 rmz250 is overheating. It started smoking 3 different times when i took it out the other day. Id let it cool down for a few, continue riding and about 20 minutes later it would start smoking again....

Several things here. Do an oil change, 10w40 motor oil. Run premium gas and install a new NGK spark plug one heat range colder than stock. It sounds like you have an air leak causing a lean fuel mix. Check the carb mount bolts and the intake manifold bolts for tightness. Also set the valve clearances with a cold engine > .002 intake and .003 exhaust. Check for any cylinder head leaks. This would show up as oil on the cooling fins at the base of the cylinder head. Tighten the head bolts if needed.

Rmz250

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

An RMZ250 has no mechanical adjustment for the valves, they are shimmed. Best approach would be to consult the Service Manual. Engines used in the RMZ are identical to the KX series

Pls post back result(s). Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.
