Coil and Ignition Module replacement BMW R80 RT

I have a 1985 BMW R80RT.english model. It would cut out after 8 miles then start again. I was told it was the coil and to replace it and the ignition module.I had the coil tested at the local Bosch agent and it had died.BMW coil and ign modules are a horrendous price. We found a Diamond Electric Co Part No FTM-608A1 (40 077) twin outlet waste spark Coil. It's a lot smaller. And a Intermotor 15000 (40 217)ignition module. These were Bosch cross over numbers I T.I.G welded a bracket to fit the coil. The engine starts and runs
Coil resistance is 0.6 ohms BMW coil is 1.3 ohms.OK they are not BMW parts. can you see any problems using them

    hi John and ZL4r0
I have the same problem and I can't understand if you are talking about this ignition coilhttp://www.motobins.co.uk/library/70420.... or this onehttp://www.motobins.co.uk/library/70800.... (called ignition coil in the BMW handbook).
    any further help is welcome
    regards
    Paolo

Hi Palo. Your Pictures look the same as what I fitted. If the part nos cross over it's worth a try.Mine worked out ok. Check coil resistance. Pureists will tell you fit the "OE" parts. There was a update in the coils from BMW. good luck

My 1985 BMW R80 is cutting out after initially running for about 20 minutes then will start again after stopping for say a minute then cuts out again around every 5 minutes. When the bike cuts out it will...

Bill,
What you are describing sounds like an ignition coil breaking down as soon as it come up to temperature. It could also be as simple as a spark plug and most probably is. I tend to disagree with the suggestion you received about the contact points (if your motorcycle actually has them). Generally points will make a mess out of starting and if they are failing wouldn't wait 20 minutes to let you know. I'm going to say spark plug(s) (change 'em both) then possibly a coil OR the high tension lead is shorting against the block or some part of the frame. Now I can't say names or someone will get upset but a German made motorcycle doesn't generally work to well with spark plugs made in America. Been in the Recreational business for a lot of years and if there is one spark plug that just works it's found in every Honda MC and of course is made in Japan. Hope you picked up on were i was trying to lead you ;-). Cheers have a great day, hum you riding your motorcycle and I'm up to my bum in snow and getting another foot of the stuff :-(
