ERRATIC & LUMPY RUNNING? AND LACK OF POWER

I HAVE A 1998 318ti COMPACT WITH 141K, INITIALLY IDLE WAS ERRATIC AND REVS WERE VERY UP AND DOWN, CHANGING THE PLUGS MOMENTARILLY SOLVED THE PROBLEM? ABOUT 1 MONTH LATER REVS SEEMED FINE BUT A LACK OF POWER (ABOVE 65/70 MPH) AND A LUMPY RIDE BECAME EVIDENT. IT SEEMS THAT THE LACK OF POWER AND LUMPY RUNNING BECAME APPARENT AFTER LENGHTY JOURNEYS? IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED THAT THE FUEL FILTER COULD NEED CHANGING? BUT I AM BECOMING CONCERNED THAT THE PROBLEM COULD LIE ELSEWHERE, DUE TO HAVING LEARNED THAT THE CAR DOES NOT HAVE A FUEL FILTER? COULD IT BE AN INJECTION PROBLEM? ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED AND I WOULD BE RELEIVED TO LEARN THAT IT WILL NOT BE AN EXPENSIVE! EXERCISE?

I suspect that you have air leak from air induction system. try to chek the breather hose. there are two hoses behind the intake manifold one is connected to valve cover to PCV , check the hose condition and replace it if necessary.

Idle erratic revs

idle control on the intake is at fault, the click you are hearing is that the unit is trying to keep the idle down. but it is eather blocked or warn out.

2006 Citroen C3 1.6 sx sensodrive sounds like a bucket of bolts and threatens to stall at low revs and idle... I cant keep driving through red lights!lol

Sorry to tell you this my friend, but you did overheat the engine. You should have stopped at first warning that the car was hot. The knocking sound is warning of no oil(or not enough) in your car. Now that you have cooked your bearings, seals and gaskets, your car will never be the same again. The solution would be new(or replacement) engine or get a different car.

It stalls out at a dead stop or when turning.

When you say or when turning I assume this is because the revs drop down to the same idle speed the engine would do at a "Dead stop" if so this is probably a bad or sticky ICV (idle Control Valve) Did you notice any lumpy or high idle speeds in the lead up to this problem?

V40 direct injection gdi . rich running & lumpy idle

replace lambda probe expensive but it will run ok after that, i dont know if you know how they work so here's a brief: lambda tells ecu how rich the exhaust gasses are, ecu ajusts fuel input as neccasery eg lambda says not anough fuel ecu puts more in and the other way round.
so if your lambda is covered in **** when you get it out just clean and put it back, if it looks clean enough it needs replacing!! jezza

dear friend-i do not believe that the problem lies with the gearbox.please find a friend with the same car and swop the TPS(trottle body sensor)and try your car if you cannot fiend a friend then go to a dealership,beware of what they will tell you but insist on there help with trying another TPSsensor

Engine revs up at start up and idle goes up and down, after awhile it settles down but idle is erratic

try cleaning your idle air control valve. located on or around the trottle body.
