I have a '88 Bros, the bike felt from a stationary position on the left side, the gear shifting leaver was bent but I've managed to straighten it up however i discovered i'm stuck with 2nd and 3rd gear, the engine is running smooth, no weird sounds, just the gears won't change
Chances are the gear selecter shaft was pushed in when it went over and possibly jammed the selector fork remove the clutch cover and have a look you might get away with just knocking it back into place if nothings been damaged

is the gear leaver returning to position after trying to select a gear.it could be that the shaft from the leaver is bent or the drum is stuck or return spring is broken.
The bike has a slightly bent shift fork. The repair is a pretty major operation and I don't recommend the casual mechanic attempt it. Below is a diagram showing how the shift drum moves slider gears for different gear changes. Please rate my answer. Thanks.
While sitting still the gears are not moving. This sounds like a slightly bent shift fork. In the diagram below the slider gear moves left and right to engage the gears. The gear "dogs" fit into holes cast into the stationary gears. The grinding takes place as the fork moves the slider into first gear but the dogs are not getting moved the full distance needed to fully engage the gear because of the bent fork. The center case must be split to gain access to the gears and shift forks.
Has the bike been dropped on the shifter side??? Has someone kick hard on the shifter leaver???There is a shifting rod the is under the side cover. If if is bent??? It will not shift like it should. You can pull this rod out when you take the side cover off, and straighten the rob back with a hammer. The rod has to be straight to shift proper.
