By removing the drive line you may move the car but it will lock up on you at some point,, the rear end, wheel bearing or broken axel will cause more damage, just tear into it and fix the problem before it causes you more trouble.....Hope that helps...
I have a 19934x4 bought it with 4 wheel drive notworking. indicator lights for 4x4 would notlight up but transfer seemed to be shiftin ok. frontaxel woul ot ingauge. I repled the front axel actuator an works fine now no problem. actuator is on the passenger sid back of the front axel pigand has a plug, mine was 2 wireroundpin plug but some have a flat pin 4 wire plug. 70 dollars at NAPA. wasa realy simple replacement didnt even need to jack up the truck. the actuator h a pin that electronically puses out engauging te front axel. a easy test is to put the truck in 4 wheel high. holdthe brak and givei little gas ad havesomeoneelse stand to the side ofthe front of the truck and see if the front axel spins. ifso th actutor is te most likely prblem. hope this helps.
A wheel bearing goes on the axel to help the wheel turn freely and is very heavily coated with grease to keep from overheating. On front of vehicle there are atleast 2 per axel and 2 on the rear wheel drive.
This Rear Axel Has A BAD Rep For Failure and Mostly Wheel Bearingd Go First ,Then By the time they go Its too Late to Save the Whole Diff I Spent 2 Days LOOKING for a Replacement for a Customer. You May Get Lucky and JUST NEED WHEEL BEARINGS, FLUID LEVEL MUST be up To FILL HOLE PLUG.
vacumn pod on the front axel is stuck on. Jack up the front wheels spin both tires at the same time and see if the front drive shaft turns. If it does the 4x4 on the axel is engaged. The front drive shaft on these should not turn when vacumn pod is disengaged. YJ's have a split axel on the right side inner axel shaft.
Drain axel of Fluid, Roemve Diff Cover (Push IN on Axel to reseal at Wheel side) Remove KEEPERS From Insied END of axel then Pull OUT on WHEEL END of Axel. use Proper Seal removal tool to remove seal. Also Use PROPER Install tool for SEAL INSTALL Reverse Procedure to Install. In hopes this helps you Out.

check for a propshaft UJ worn first vehicle up in air wheel free then grasp front and rear of each joint in turn and give it twist ,iam pretty sure this has gone and not the pinnion/crownwheel.
you don't have to remove the whole axle just the hub assembly this is held on by 4 bolts. remove wheel. then remove drum/ or rotor remove all the brake hardware. remove outer dust cap to bearings remove center nut and remove outter bearing. remove the hub this will give you plenty of room to remove the broken bolt. please rate this
