The check engine light is on and the code is narrow passage in EGR. Would like step by step for checking valve and removing and cleaning if possible. 1996 A6 Quattro Avant

The problems with the first solution are:
    1. Too general, I knew all of that.
    2. It is possible to clean an EGR valve as long as the valve is able to hold a vacuum.
There are lots of things to move around before I can get to the two bolts that hold the EGR valve on. This being an Audi, it is complicated and done improperly is going to be a problem. I want the actual step by step. Besides that, it would be good to get an answer from a person that has cleaned the channel in an EGR valve (although I am pretty sure I can get that done once I get the valve carefully out). Also advice on re-install.

The idea of covering a hose that runs to the EGR and see if engine stumbles I will try. I am not sure what "xxxx" means. I think that your test is to make sure the vacuum is working in an easier way than getting a vacuum test tool, and so I like it. The problem, if I do have a working vacuum, is still the narrow passages through the EGR and that channel into the engine. I need a step by step for getting to the EGR for your test and then continuing step by step to take out the EGR safely. It would be good to have a specific for the type of vaccum hose I should get if I need to replace it. Either way, I think I will replace that hose. What works for hose there?

I do not want to start this fix until I have the step by step. This is a new car to me and, from what I understand, there are lots of ways to wreck an Audi system by uninformed work. If you know the step by step to get me through the process, as I asked in my question, send it along. If not, let me know so I can ask another. Still, thanks for the vacuum test idea. Have you actually tested an EGR this way?

    thanks,

    Chris

Disconnect first the vacuum line from the EGR valve. Connect a hose to the EGR and cover it or **** on the hose.

IF the engine stumbles the passages are ok, you may just want to check the vacuum lines or the sensors itself. Otherwise try cleaning the EGR with cleaning spray before replacing.

I have a 2000 Ford Explorer and I used a pocketscan (OBD II code reader and the code is P1400). What does this code mean?

This code refers to the Delta Pressure Feedback EGR(DPFE) sensor voltage. The voltage in this sensor changes as it detects a difference in vacuum. Test: Engine running, so be careful and use proper care! Find the EGR valve and disconnect the vacuum line going to the top of the valve. There should be no vacuum there at this time. If there is then check for proper EVR (EGR vacuum regulator) operation and vacuum line routing. These lines could be broken, cracked or plugged. I have run across many EGR passages in the intake manifold that become plugged with carbon and prevent EGR flow, check this by removing the throttle housing that the EGR valve is bolted to and look at the passages, clean if neccessary, reset Check engine light and see if it comes back on after operation. Hope this helps, let me know.

Engine light on code reads po401

I believe this code is insufficient EGR flow. On this engine, the passages to the EGR valve often become carboned up and cause this code. Remove the EGR valve and inspect the passages to see if they need to be cleaned.

My check engine light and TCS light came on. Code

P0401: Isufficient Flow Detected in EGR system.
-clean the EGR port with the carburetor cleaner.
-clean the EGR passage inside the EGR valve with the caburetor cleaner.
Reset the light, if the light still coming back, then replace the EGR valve.

Check engine light on-code says egr valve is bad

the egr system consists of control circuits as well as the egr valve itself. troubleshooting will have to be performed in order to pinpoint the fault. the valve may just need cleaning. there may be damage in the long run since the egr system introduces exhaust gas to the air intake to reduce combustion temperatures.

Engine check light, code 401 low egr vacum egr

The EGR and the lift sensor may look perfect from the outside but the under side of the EGR valve and the EGR passage (small tube) are the REAL WORKING parts.

The carbon inside the EGR passage tube and the underside of the EGR valve must to clean out.

Make sure you has a NEW EGR gasket before you start the job.

It's a 2-3 hours job.

If you do not clean the EGR passage tube the Nox emission will get higher (check you past emission reports).

Egr value, check engine light come on, egr valve has been replaced 2 time and sensor also

The problem with the Warning system for the EGR is it usually blames insufficient flow to the sensors that measure the flow.

What is really happening is the intake manifold is clogging under the airhorn mount. The airhorn has a butterfly flap on it and mounts where the carburetors use to be. The EGR gets its flow from passages beneath the airhorn. You need to clean the passages to the EGR. Then remove the battery cable for 10 minutes to clear the old codes. The check engine code should go away when the manifold is clean.

Service engine light comes on the code is 32 have any idea

DTC code 32 is the EGR valve failure, check the vacuum hose and electrical connection to the EGR. remove the EGR and clean it with carb cleaner. After reinstalling the EGR and if the check engine light still on, you may have to replace the EGR valve. Good luck and hope this helps, keep me posted. Be glad to help.

Check engine light came on codeP0401

Yes, this is a carbon issue. the EGR valve is very sensitive to carbon deposits. i suggest using pressured air to clean out this throttle body before you purchase another valve. it will keep rejecting the egr if its not cleaned.
