SOURCE: Front Main Seal is blown on the Transmission
You have to remove the transmission, remove the torque converter to access the seal. Most likely the bushing behind the seal is worn out allowing fluid to leak past the seal. After the trans. is out, take it to a trans. shop. It requires a special tool to change the bushing. Seems like a bunch of work for $10.00 in parts. The rear main seal requires pulling the pan to access it. When the trans. is out, this is the time to replace the rear main seal on the engine.

Yes ,regardless of which seal is used as you have to loosen main bearings so the crank can be moved down as the seals are crush type and you wont have the clearance to fit the new one,Split seals (2 piece)are the easiest to fit without moving the crank too much. The one piece seal also means trans removal. As far as removing trans completely you may be able to move it back while its being held up by a trolley jack and only pull it back far enough to give you the clearance needed.Autos are far easier than manuals. If its the rope type seal a special tool is used to fit them and its not a tool that is sold just anywhere as that type of seal kept noahs ark from sinking and havnt been used in engines for many many years.
SOURCE: rear main seal leaks..does this affect transmission??
A leaking rear main seal will not cause your transmission to leak.
The transmission has its own seal and should not leak because of the engine rear main seal.
Due to the labor involved in replacing the rear main seal on the engine, it is best if you replace the front transmission seal at the same time if possible.
Installation varies on different vehicles but the principles are the same.
SOURCE: How hard is it to replace the rear main seal in a '87 Samurai?
Is it a 4x4 if it is you would have to seperate the tranny from transfer case and drive shaft tp change out seal.If not just drop the drive shaft and replace seal.We are talking about the rear seal at the end of the tranny.
