MY 99 MITSUBISHI MONTERO SPORT XLS 4WD, IS SMOKING A LOT, IT BURNS OIL LIKE A QUART EACH WEEK..IT RUNS FINE. JUST THAT IT SMOKES WHILE AT STOP ESPECIALLY WHEN I TAKE OFF FROM A STOP IT SMOKES MORE. WHILE I DRIVE IT SMOKES FOR AWHILE THEN GOES AWAY TILL I COME TO COMPLETE STOP AGAIN. THE SMOKING STARTS ALL OVER AGAIN.. HELP

Sorry to tell you this, but it sounds like they may have put your rings in wrong or one broke right away. If you want to verify which cylinder it is, pull the spark plugs and see which one has oil on it. I suggest you take it back to the place that did overhaul and have done over.

It's burning a lot of oil. You'll have to have the engine overhauled to fix it. Did it just start smoking and losing oil? Might be a broken oil ring. It is a bluish smoke out the exhaust? That's a sure sign of oil burning.

White smoke is antifreeze leak into cylinder.
Blue smoke is oil passing by rings or valve stems.
Black smoke could be gasoline problem or tune up problem.

this particular vehicle is known for this problem not knocking your ride but all mitsubishi.s are eventual oil burners the local tv station in my town owns three 01 monteros and all smoke alot when idling for lengthy periods after idling you press accelerator and a huge plume of smoke before coming to me with problem they were talked into replacing valve guides and valve stem seals @ over a thousand dollars in parts and labor did not help at all the most help comes from running 20w50 motor oil with one quart being subsituted with lucas oil stabilizer this helps there vehicle tremendously very little if any smoke now and this was embarassing for them they will be replacing vehicles soon with new ones and will not be purchasing a mitsubishi in fact there sales has slumped in this town to the point the dealership has now closed down and nearest is one hour away

the weakest link from water entering engine is intake manifold losing its torque. their are four water ports right next to valve ports. two in front two at rear of intake manifold. they warp fairly easy.so check before re installing

it could be oil left on engine just burning off
