When it die's check to see what's missing ! Spark or fuel pressure .Then diagnose which ever system isn't working . Check for B+ voltage at a coil and a fuel injector ,don't know how much you know about automotive electrical systems . If no B+ voltage the ASD relay maybe going bad . Do you know what a wiring diagram is , how to test electrical circuit's with a DMM - digital multi-meter ? No Start Diagnostic Basics EricTheCarGuy

Enter vehicle info. year , make , model an engine size. Under system click on engine ,then under subsystem click fuel controls . Click search button then the blue links . When it die's check B+ voltage an ground circuit's , you have to find what is missing !

Yes the crank sensor can cause this problem, they go open when hot.
SOURCE: 3.5 will not start just back fires serverly
Get new belt installed & all aligned as it should be & do compression test before going any further to make sure. If good compression there in all cylinders, you probably dodged ( no pun intended) a bullet. Not 100% sure whether that is an interference engine or not, but will see if I can find out. By the sounds of the backfiring description, I'd be tempted to say you still have good compression. here's to hoping. Make sure when you get it back running that you keep a close eye on oil & coolant levels for a while just in case the backfiring cause some gaskets or seals to blow. Watch for difference between cylinders when doing compression test.

you need to ck some basics you could have a vacuum leak which would hide during warm up but cause havoc when hot,the leak would cause high idle then your pcm would try to lower idle to spec thru use of idle control motor causing surging idle ,also fuel pressure needs to be checked while acting up,may be more cost effective to pay for an hour of diagnostic.

I seen this before first of all don't let the car dealer to BS the way to your money, most of the time is noting wrong whit the sensor it self but is the plug than goes in to the sensor this what i recommend is to buy another sensor from your local auto part store or salvage yard (cheaper) get three pieces of cable and solder directly in to the sensor brake the plastic around the sensor plug if necessary and secure the three cables to it put some silicon in between the solder and the place the new sensor on top of the old one so you now wish wire goes to which and cut and attach one by one. I now this works 100% i have done it my self many times if you need diagrams or sensor locations you can find that at www.alldatadiy.com now if you still have problems unplug all harness especially all the ones than comes from the back of the engine because that engine tends to leak oil on top of the harness if you have wires doing shortcut replace that section you can solder use heat string tube and change the insulation hose they sale those on part stores to put some zip tides on the ends and you will have your car back and will last Note don't let it get to close to the exhaust use zip tides to keep from touching hot areas.

YOU MOST LIKE HAVE VALVES CONTACTING PISTONS AND NOT ALLOWING ENGINE ROTATION..A 2.7 ENGINE IS AN INTERFERENCE ENGINE AND IF GOES OUT OF TIME WILL DAMAGE VALVES AND/OR PISTONS
