The wire will go from the post on the alternator the one with the nut to the hot post on the starter then another cable will go from the starter on the same post to the positive on the battery. however if the car died tells me something else is not right because the vehicle doesnt run off of the battery it is merely to start it then the alternator feeds the power while running. you should be able to remove the battery while running and should still keep running

My car keeps surging wanting to die after it starts up

Common Problems That Trigger the P052 Code
  • Defective Alternator
  • Defective Alternator wiring or connector(s)
  • Defective B+ battery cable from Alternator to battery
  • Poor Charging System ground(s)
  • Defective PCM wiring/connection to Alternator
  • Defective PCM
  • Defective Voltage Regulator
  • Large Parasitic battery drain
  • Defective Battery and/or cables
Common Misdiagnoses
  • Battery
  • Starter
Check the condition of your battery cables - are they corroded/have broken wire strands? Also check where the negative battery lead attaches to the engine/bodywork.

Check all the wiring for breaks and tightness - a small earth wire can be loosened and retightened to create a better earth. Corroded power wires can struggle to supply the correct voltage - remove and clean whatever you can find.

It's unlikely to be your alternator as you say it has been checked - the voltage regulator is built into the alternator so it must be okay.

A parasitic drain can be difficult to find. Try switching off everything - radio, heater ... the next time you start the car. If you know somebody who has a voltmeter and knows how to check for a power drain .. ask them.

The link below shows a Saturn PCM (it may not be your actual model..). Check all wiring around the PCM

How do i go from external to internal alernator?

It only comes with an internal alternator. I believe it has a regulator mounted "externally" in the motor compartment. On modern alternators the regulator is smaller and built in and is "solid state" no moving parts like the regular the car came with. Research a conversion kit - you can hook up a modern alternator but you have to do something with the regulator wires. Hit a classic oldsmobile forum for guidence.

Alternator not charging

I believe the regulator for that vehicle is in the PCM ,if it failed you are looking at a $$$$ part. You can use an earlier regulator and leave the control module alone.Like a 1985 diplomat ,have to get the pigtail for the regulator also, then run the 2 white wires to that instead of the PCM

Alternater wont charge battery and fusable link on starter keeps burning

Bad voltage regulator. Usually built-into alternator.
Start car and unplug battery, if it dies your alternator is dead. Get new alternator. If car keeps running, get a voltmeter and check voltage coming through - should be higher than 12v but less than 18v. Any other number means your voltage regulator is dead, cheaper to get a new alternator.

How do u wire I'n a 1972 ford f100custom truck

Sorry iam a thick brit having problems with your spelling which as we all know we cannot spell in the UK or pronounce aluminium or tomatoes so the man to ask is emmisionwiz as hes a ford dealer fitter with enough years under his belt to know exactly what you need to know ,so try a direct question ,but for this year with a seperate regulator why not try a alternator off a later model with a built in regulator ,as for the starter motor then a wire from the contact switch on the back of the key switch that has power when the key is turned to the start position and this wire goes to the small terminal on the starter motor .I do not the facility of a fancy pen thing attached to my computer that i can draw a quick pic for you .

I have a 2003 kia spectra 1.8 liter. The alternator isn't charging the battery but when I took it off and had it tested 3 times it passed every time. The belt is tight enough and I replaced the plug...

Hi, there are 3 fuses the the alternator needs to charge the battery. These may be inside the car or in a box in the engine compartment. They are named IG1, ECU, and ALT. If you have trouble finding them, please get back to me.

Dodge durango will not start at all , bought new battery ,looked at all fuses alternator is working.all i can hear is a clicking noise coming from the glove compartment

Replace the starter,it is a low geared starter ,witch has contacts, instead of brushes,if I am correct you can sometimes tap the starter while trying to start, and the starter will turn the engine over, use a hammer,do not slam the starter,it will break the magnets in the stater.

These trucks do have a regulator. But most importantly check all of your grounds. One bad ground can mess up an entire electrical system. Especially the charge.
