hi Richard
yes wiring could be the problem but your wiring loom should not need replacing may only need repair, check your lic. plate bulb socket for power with the running lights on / check wire from bulb to left/right side for cracks in the insulation of the wire (looking for any shorts)
the lic. plate lights get power from the tail lights (running lights) if your running lights are not working also u may have a blown fuse
if not look for a brake/cut in the wire going from the tail lights to
lic. plate light sockets.
Look for blown fuse in the fuse panel. Make sure boat is not connected, replace fuse, see if lights return. If they return, you have a short in your trailer lights or connector (car or trailer).
Have you checked the bulbs? Some people don't beleive all the lights can burn out at once but when one brake light is on they are all on and for the same amount of time.
If the bulbs are fine then check the connection where the trailer plug is to the main harness. Some of those connectors go between the main harness and the tail lights and the connector can go bad.
First, be sure you are replacing with the correct bulb and correct fuse. If so, you must have a short in the circuit. A short is a place where the wire touches the car frame or bulb socket or some other metal part. If the fuse blows instantly it is likely a direct short. Check the wires where they connect to the bulb socket and any place you see them to see of the insulation is damaged or missing. This is especially true of any place where the wire move or can rub on something. A short can come from only one small strand of the wire touching metal. It is difficult to trace the entire wire because it is in places that may be hard to see. Somewhere in the system there is a short or something that causes the fuse to blow. If you have modified the lights for a trailer or some other item that adds lights that also could be the problem. More lights use more current and may be more that the fuse will allow. DON'T REPLACE WITH A LARGER FUSE. THAT CAN CAUSE A FIRE. Good luck. Thanks for using FixYa. Gaker
check all your fuses. something may have shorted out and blew out a fuse.if you don`t have blown fuse there is a short somewere.you will have to locate it.
Pull all of the bulbs and try it using a tester to each light. I have seen a bulb that would contact both posts and kill the lights. Hope this helps. Mike
did u check tail light fuse underhood fuse center,if that fuse is blown ,tail lights on trailer and lic. light on truck wont work,if ok,check elect. circuit for broken wire.at trailer plug or conn.
