Brake-sahift interlock solenoid not working. check fuse first. when key is on and brake is pressed, it either activates or deactivates the solenoid so you can shift out of park. safety thing.
chrck owner manual for a mechanical overide process. maybe there is one.

The shift interlock system prevents the shifting from PARK unless the brake pedal is depressed. The shift interlock system consists of a shift lock actuator mounted at the base of the steering column tube. If the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the shift lock actuator is continually on unless the brake pedal is depressed.

Check the cable in the steering column to see if the little clip or ring that is meant to hold the cable in place has not broken. You can use a zip-tie to hold it in place until you can buy the proper part. My zip-tie fix is still working after 4 years :)

You may need to clarify, however it is assumed that the vehicle was operating fine, then once placed into park, you can no longer shift out of park.

The BTSI (Brake Transmission Shift Interlock) solenoid is designed to prevent accidental shifting out of park by "little hands".

Recommend you contact your dealer regarding the following TSB.

Check the #15 fuse in fusebox behind marked panel on left lower dash just below and left of steering column. This is only a 5 amp fuse but it controls a lot. This fixed our 2001 Expedition. 25 cents.

Check under the dash at the top of the brake lever. There are some plastic switches which can get hit by your feet. Since you have to step on the brake pedal to shift the transmission out of Park, that switch is probably broken or out of place.

You can have someone look at the brake lights and see if they light up when the pedal is pressed. Chances are that circuit is not working so the electric release for the gearshift will not work.

2001 ford expediton 1st the car would not start went online and read similar post so then i put the car in neutral and it worked. Now the car starts out of neutral but the windshield whippers dont work, the windows dont go down dont work, and the dome lights dont work. I checked all fuses and all seem fine. Is there another fuse that I may have overlooked or do all of these run of the same fuse. What fuse should I check where is the relay for this located what else should I try live in cali water is not the problem. Thanks

It is probably not the shift linkage causing your concern. All modern vehicles have a feature called Shift Interlock. It doesn't allow the shifter on automatic equipped vehicles to be moved from park without the key in the ignition and the brake applied. There should be a bypass that will allow you to atleast drive the car for the time being. Check your owners manual to find where it is. It's usually around the shifter. The most common cause for this problem are the brake switch or the shift lock solenoid.

replace the neutral safety switch or also try rocking the vehicle forward and back and then trying the shifter again.if it is parked tight against a curb and had rolled forward just a little bit and came to rest with the vehicles weight against one tire this will cause a bind and won't let it out of park this is especially true of 4x4 vehicles as the mileages get hire I hope this helps and good luck

Have a 2003 Dodge Intrepid. I can't get the shifter on the column to move out of park even when I move the steering wheel up,down & side to side. Is it the cable, the link, what?

The shifter needs to be inspected. The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities. But if it was working right up till now and suddenly this occurred then its shifter assembly alignment issue.

My scond & fourth gear is grating

The shifter needs to be inspected. The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities. But if it was working right up till now and suddenly this occurred then its shifter assembly alignment issue.

2003 chevy suburban 4wd 1500 lt shifts slow to 2nd gear and vibrates between 65 and 70 mph

Sounds to me that you need your trans fluid changed and filter. When you do change it use a quart of Lucas transmission conditioner to it. Also check and see if you may have a bad univercel, It will also make it vibrate at faster speeds or your drive shaft may need to be rebalanced.
