Malibu was idleing and I heard a loud pop like a belt broke, the belt is still in tact how ever......now when I start the car it back fires and is not running at its full compasity
Re: Malibu was idleing and I heard a loud pop like a belt...
Well the belt you see if the accessory belt not the timing belt/chain. It soulds like you may have jumped some teeth inside the engine or snapped that belt.
A coil pack make a poping sound? not really unless its sparking to the block and igniting fuel (which is highly unlikely).
But failed coil packs can make the engine run very badly and the cylinders can soud like they are backfiring.
Get a code reader (rent) from an auto store to find out for sure.A coil pack make a poping sound? not really unless its sparking to the block and igniting fuel (which is highly unlikely).

check the timing belt has'nt snapped , do not try starting engine until you are sure the belt is in tact, if ok get the OBD codes read as will narrow down if a switch/sensor is at fault , if nothing shows check the cylinder compressions
Sounds like it's back firing. Check your timing belt. If it has issues get it changed immediatly. If the belt slips far enough you can destroy your valves.
Hello: Sounds like the serpentine belt broke, you need to find out what broke the belt, check all pulleys on the belt system and see if you can turn them by hand. You will not beable to turn the big crankshaft pulley.
one or more of the pulley's is defective, most likely the tensioner pulley, but check them all for wear and side to side movement which indicates a worn bearing, this causes the belt to not run true and chirp.
sounds like the belt tensioner. look for any drive pulley that doesn't actually drive anything but is turned by the belt... that is spring loaded and keeps tension on the belt... if it moves freely... it needs to be replaced.
Could the coil over pack failing make a simular noise
