P200A = Intake Manifold Runner Performance Bank 1.
A manifold runner is a butterfly valve inside the manifold. It is designed to improve emissions and performance. You will need to get a good mechanic to check the manifold and the valve. It is not a serious problem but it should be dealt with soon.
The valve could be faulty and fixing it could improve your performance and fuel consumption.
The cost will depend on the system fitted. Some need a whole new manifold and others a bolt on part for the manifold. Get a few different quotes as repair prices can vary a lot.
Please take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic. A leak in the intake manifold gasket can cause catastrophic results not only are you losing coolant to the outside but may also be leaking coolant internally which could contaminate the oil and cause the engine to fail due to loss in lubricating properties. Also, if not torqued properly you may have a warped intake manifold. Please see a good mechanic it may cost more but you risk a much larger cost to replace an engine
From what your describing it sounds like a blown intake gasket, the gasket itself costs under $30 if you are doing this yourself. Be sure to get the manifold gasket and not the plenum gasket too
The Grand Marquis's have a know problem that causing overheating. The intake manifold cracks around the water inlet tubes on the intake manifold causing it to loose anti-freeze which in turn causes overheating. Mercury has a beefed up replacement intake manifold that cures the problem. It was a subject of an unannounced recall but they would replace it unless the problem occurs. The recall was for 7 years which the 1999 model wouldn't qualify for now. It happened to me and cost about $450.00 (parts and labor) to fix it. I used a local repair shop to do the work. If, after the engine is hot, you hear water/steam coming from the top of the manifold, you have the problem
It is difficult to repair a crack in an intake manifold, so replacing it is a good solution. You may want to consider a used manifold you can get from an automobile recycler. This can save a lot of money for you. It is also a good reliable fix because intake manifolds rarely fail, so a used part will be reliable.
Based on local labor rates (which may be different in your area), the estimate to repair your vacuum leak at your intake (also assuming the intake will have to come off the engine to fix the leak), the cost will be around $350.00. Is it a 4 cylinder or 6?
This engine has a plastic intake, jsut inside of the throttle body is a tube that comes from the EGR. It will burn through the plastic into a coolant passage located inside of the intake. You will need to replace the intake manifold and if you want there is a revised lower intake manifold with a slightly smaller diameter tube to prevent future burn through that will prevent a reoccurance. However, it is a costly repair for what is a infrequent failure. I suggest just replacing the upper intake manifold. They are now available through the aftermarket.
