If this is the starter solenoid, the two large wires go on the bigger posts, one from battery and the other to the starter. The smaller wires go on the smaller posts. One from the ignition switch and the other to ground.

This is a 1999 MY starting system diagram.
I cannot recall if this is one of the items that changed from the 1997-98 series or not ( 1999 MY was a transitional MY, some things were like the 97-98 series, others like the 00-03 series ), so don't take things as incorrect if it does not match 100%.
The starter motor relay is what you changed on the firewall.

Ford 150 not starting from key

Sounds like a broken wire from the ignition switch to the solenoid. - if it starts when you crank it over, the switch is probably good, because if the switch was bad the control module would not get the signal to keep the car running - it would think the key was turned off.
But sometimes you do get a bad solenoid or switch, coming new off the shelf, due to quality control issues. try another solenoid to be sure. or if the car cranks but does not run, try another switch.

1996 f150 will not start

Hi:) If the engine will turn over but not fire up Check to spark module on the side of the distributor and check to make sure it is getting fuel from the fuel pump in the tank and the fuel relay on the drivers front inner fender. If the engine won't turn over check the solenoid and starter. And check for corroded green wire while you are check everything else.

97 ford f150 w'ont come out of 4 wheel high

Me and a couple guys at work had the same problem. My brother who is a ford mech said it is a vacuum solenoid that is located on the passenger side fire wall. It should have 2 vacuum tubes and a small wire harness connected to it. On mine I turned 4wd on and nothing happened. I unhooked the solenoid and it engaged then I hooked it up and unhooked to and it was able to disengage. They only sell these soleiods at the dealers though for about $40. Ive looked all over the net and found nothing. But check those first cause if its no them then its either the hubs not disengaging or solenoid that engages the transfer case. Hope this helped.
