That smell is a byproduct of the catalytic converter doing its job, if the smell is really excessive the engine may be running rich due to bad O2 sensors but if it's running good I would have the exhaust system checked for leaks or a damaged tail pipe directing exhaust in the wrong direction. I hope this helps. Take care.

SOURCE: engine light on; slow acceleration; rotten egg smell 2000 vw passat 132,XXX miles

Hey there riddick,

That rotten egg smell is a problem with your catalytic converter. Too much back pressure is not allowing your engine to run normally.

I'll bet its been getting hot too.

Warning: For your own safety, until this is resolved, do not look under or stick your head under the car with the engine running. I've been in a vehicle when a converter with these same symptoms blew apart at the seam. Made my head hit the roof. If it happened a few minutes earlier I would've gotten a faceful of freshly flattened converter. So be careful.

To tell for sure about the problem, try to get it to an auto parts store that does free code readings from your On Board Diagnostics. There should be errors referencing the engine, O2 sensors and emissions. The exact diagnostic codes with determine your next course of action.

Be safe,
Mike

SOURCE: Buick smells like rotten eggs and will not run

Sounds like a bad catalytic converter. If you were feeling a lot of heat under your feet while driving (before it stopped completely), this is one of the symptoms of a bad catalytic converter. The smell is sulphur backing up and not efficiently moving through your car's exhaust.

SOURCE: 1996 chevy c1500 w/rotten egg smell,loss of power,rough idle

Your catalytic converter is plugged up,  If you check the exhaust output at the tailpipe you will find it restricted.
Let me know if I  can assist further.

I have a 2002 Ford Taurus Adil High smells like rotten eggs in the fans won't cut on

You need to check fuel pressure while starting it and at idle and while driving to see if its low or dips or surges indicating pump or filter or regulator issues.
I also recommend a new set of motor craft spark plugs be installed.
The smell is being caused by unburnt fuel overheating the catalytic converters.
After the above procedures check for any signs of vacuum leaks especially on the PCV tube from the valve cover to throittle body and do a fuel system service

My 2002 Pontiac GP V6 smells like rotten eggs from the exhaust

The rotten egg smell if it is coming from the exhaust is a very good sign that you catalytic converter has failed or is failing. but a bad or battery that is being overcharged can also make a rotten egg like smell.

Rotten egg smell from exhaust; vehicle only has 31,105 miles (2009 Saturn Vue V6 FWD)

sulfur smell is almost always the catalytic converter, it's not old enough to need one but that doesn't mean it's not bad. i've seen other GM products with the same problem, take it to a muffler shop and get it tested.
