What kind of transmission fluid does the 2008 Chevy Impala ...

This would suggest not, although it says general purpose.

the transmission has 3 class capacities, all A/T

1. rebuild dry (17 pints USA, 8.5qt
2. just pan drain, (varies by temperature and time)
3. or drained out clutch. and pan and drip dry. (guess 8qt)

we cant guess what you are doing.? not at all.
get a full flush and filter in any ASE shop , is best.
let them do it.

draining out 1/3 is hopeless.

think of the A/T as a giant ATF sponge. (Sponge Bob in Pink)?

how is that.?

The fluid type is located on transmission dipstick early models take 7176 fluid same as Dexron II later models take a plus 3 or plus 4 fluid and check level in neutral car running normal operating temp with parking brake on.

Use ATF Plus (Type 7176) for your particular transmission, NOT Dexron, Mercon, or generic automatic transmission fluid, Chrysler transmissions do not like any other kind and tend to fail quite quickly with the wrong fluid).

I have been working on cars for 40 years, however, I take my car to trhe local oil change shop for any needed transmission oil changes. It is messy and if you don't use the correct fluid or the proper amount you will end up paying a lot more than the cost of a transmission service. The entire transmission system should be flushed which requires the proper equipment. If you pull the trans pan and drain the 3 or 4 quarts of oil from the pan you will still leave several more quarts (5-6) of dirty oil in system. Let the professionals do the transmission service.

Why was fluid changed? whats Super ATF fluid? the recommended fluid is DEXRON III

AUTOMATIC
Front differential: 1.3 quarts of 75w-90 gear oil
Transmission:(pan drain and refill only)
4 quarts of Dexron III ATF

MANUAL
(front diff and transmission are same fill point)
3.05 quarts of 75w-90 gear oil

More than likely, like most automatic transmissions, yours does not have an oil plug. You need to drop the transmission oil pan to drain the old oil... You need to buy a transmission filter/pan gasket kit. The filter is located on the bottom of the tranny. You will see it when you remove the pan. Replace the filter, thoroughly remove any traces of old gasket material, clean the mating surfaces, and reinstall the pan with the new gasket. Torque the pan bolts to the manufacturers spec (you should be able to get this where you buy the filter/gasket kit). Refill the transmission through the dipstick (Capacity for the Voyager is 4 quarts, make sure to use ATF Plus (Type 7176) for your particular tranny, NOT Dexron, Mercon, or generic automatic transmission fluid, Chrysler transmissions do not like any other kind and tend to fail quite quickly with the wrong fluid). Fill to the full cold level. Start the engine, move the shifter through all gear ranges, and put it back in park. Leave the engine running and refill to cold full. Drive the car for 5-10 minutes and, with the engine still running and the car in park, fill to Hot full. You should be ready to go!
