THE ALTERNATOR HARNESS ON MY 98 INFINITI I30 HAS 2 GROUND WIRES BUT THE USED 99 MAXIMA ALTERNATOR I BOUGHT ONLY HAS ONE GROUND POST WILL THAT WORK AND CAN I HOOK BOTH GROUND WIRE UP TO THE 1 POST

If fuses/circuit breaker ok..... Look for broken wires where the wire harness comes out of the door and into the vehicle. You will have to cut the rubber boot encasing the wire harness and inspect the wiring. Broken wiring is common on older vehicles as the harness flexes each time the door is opened and closed. If broken wiring found, repair as necessary

same transmission? same engine? 98-99 was the cut-over year for changing small block chevy motors

it some time is connected to the transmission bolts or side of the engine

the problem indicates a faulty voltage regulator or dead short in a wire from the alternator
after the first alternator you should consulted an accredited auto electrician to check the system properly

what light are coming on please be more specific in the question

You have a ground wire off or theres a plug maybe your over looking that needs to be plugged in

turn your vehicle on, disconnect the battery, both terminals(while truck is still on) if it dies on you, then either the alternator is bad or wiring is wrong. if it stays on, then you may have a bad battery or voltage regulator. Check the voltage on the battery before you turn it on(should be from 11.5v-12v), when you turn it on if the alternator if working properly you should have around 13v-14v.

1995-98 Models

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Remove the splash guard on the right side of the vehicle.
3. Loosen the alternator belt idler pulley.
4. Slip the drive belt off the alternator pulley.
5. Remove the four air conditioning compressor mounting bolts.
6. Remove the radiator fan and fan shroud.
7. Move the air conditioning compressor forward.
8. Disconnect the alternator harness connector.
9. Remove the alternator mounting bolts, and lower the alternator from the vehicle.

To install:

1. Hold the alternator in place and install the mounting bolts.
2. Plug in the alternator harness connector.
3. Move the air conditioning compressor back into location.
4. Install the radiator cooling fan and shroud.
5. Install the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts.
6. Place the drive belt on the alternator pulley.
7. Tighten the drive belt to the proper tension with the idler pulley.
8. Install the splash guard.
9. Connect the negative battery terminal.

Take the alternator wire off and measure length and the connections you need running from the battery/ground (whichever cable you are replacing and go to your nearest part store and they should be able to hook you up with what you need.

Sounds like you have reversed the wires going into the back of the alternator. Contact the dealer, or go in and have them show you which wire goes where.
