Go to rear pump, disconnect wiring harness and connect power to it directly. If pump runs, you may have bad wiring or the hoses/filter may be clogged. If it doesn't run, you have a bad pump. I

SOURCE: F-250 FUEL PROBLEM

Hi, My brothers 250 had the same problem and is now fixed. The fuel pump in each tank has a check valve that allows the fuel to run in one direction only. When this valve fails to close fuel runs into that tank when the other pump is running. We replaced the pump and all is well. Dan

SOURCE: Fuel Tanks reversed , Gauge not reading?

The Ford trucks were recalled for the tank switch replacement. Somehow the switches would pump fuel from one tank to the other. This would cause the one tank to overflow and or result in a fire from hot exhaust temps coming into contact with the fuel. Check the dash tank switch. It is probably bad.

SOURCE: 1986 F150: Rear gas tank results in engine sputtering/dies

i think u have a bad fuel pump, switching unit does nothing but not allow fuel to be pumped from tank to tank, for example if useing rear tank lets feul flow to engine not iti nto frt tank, when it goes bad you will see gas flowing out of frt tank because its pumping into tank from rear tank, good luck.check fuel preasure w rear tank is on.

SOURCE: I have a 1988 Ford F250 with the 460 engine and

The fuel pump relay and the oil pressure switch as well. The oil pressure switch runs power to the fuel pump when you first start it
When the oil pressure reaches operating range the relay takes over
They are both inexpensive so replace both of these parts to be safe and kill two birds with one stone. If one goes out the other will soon enough

I have a 1997 F250, 460, Truck will not run on front tank, if I switch to the rear it runs great. If The truck is running on the rear and I switch to the front tank, the truck dies. Ideas?

Have the fuel pressure checked on the front pump when this happens. You either have a defective fuel pump, a defective switch over poppet valve or a defective dash fuel tank selection valve. switch.

Just purchased a 97 chev 3500 series pu with dual fuel tanks. Don't know how to switch from front to rear tank. there is no switch

There is no switch. What you have is a "transfer pump" that moves fuel from the rear tank to the front tank as required, so that you get a smooth declining indication of fuel left on the gauge in the dash.

If the transfer pump goes bad, any fuel in the rear tank will not be pumped to the front tank so you'll only be running on the front tank.

The fuel level indicator is on the front tank, so the gauge will still accurately register the amount of fuel in the front tank.

Switched to rear tank pump wasn't running. removed rear fuel pump. switched to front tank and started ran and stopped won't start. rear pump is off and the lines are open.

jump over relay on the ground side of relay with the ign. on because of the start & run curcuit in the computer activates the fuel pump relay. then you can hear the pumps.

My f350 1997 will not run on the rear tank . how do i go about finding what the problem is?

well, first, to find out if its the in tank fuel pump or the tank selector valve, the cheapest and probable easiest thing to do is find the selector valve under the truck and switch the incoming fuel lines. front tank to rear tank inlet, and vice versa. If the truck still doesnt run, you either have an electrical delivery problem to the in tank fuel pump or a bad fuel pump. If after switching the lines, it does run, then you need a new selector valve

I can't get the fuel to the engine from rear tank only

Does this have three fuel pumps? One in each tank and one on the frame rail. I know it at least has one in each tank. It doesn't have an electric switch valve. It has a mechanical one that makes sure the fuel returns to the right tank. When you flip the tank switch the power switches to the pump in the other tank.

Front tank sputters and truck dies

It definitely has something to do with the fuel flow from the front tank. It may be the fuel pump again, the older F-150's with two tanks soemtimes have problems with the fuel pumps because of the extra pull from two tanks, and the switching between them.

You could check the fuel filter (assuming there are two fuel filters, one for each tank)...but otherwise it sounds like a fuel pump problem, or possibly an obstruction in the switching mechanism for the two tanks, or an obstruction in the line itself. Hope that helps!
