sounds about right for what i think it is ,now remove the EGR valve and make a gasket from a coca cola can and do not cut the middle out ,so it blocks it off completely then try it as i am almost positive this is your problem .

Mercedes E240 1997. Its not even cranking. It might crank after a long while and starts then you drive ok. But the moment you switch the car off, it starts the same problem of no starting or cranking

called a DEAD starter motor, too. as in silent. (petrol or diesel)
but while silent can you hear the starterrelay click?
so jumper cable jump starts fail too?? to good car?
swap battery from good car to bad car yet?
no crank has these common cause
  1. battery is bad, buy a new one. batteries can go intermittent too
  2. alternator dead making battery fail.
  3. Fuses bad, any. even the huge fuse for alternator blew up, in engine.bay fuse box..
  4. battery lugs rusty any of 4 ends or loose or both.
  5. key switch failing (alarm options here?)??????? LED glows in IMMO or alram?
  6. starter relay bad.?
  7. The transmission fails in Park and Neutral both ,always try both.

we have no E240 they year in uSA E300 yes.

wiki, searched to see what is there.
. In North America, the range also features two diesels, including both non-turbocharged (1996-1997)
"e230 code show Power is rated at 120 kW (160 PS; 160 hp) for the Belgian market for vehicles built between 08/1997-05/2000"
the Germane schematic a true horror that. unlike any others.

I have a 1997 bmw 740i. Check engine light came on (matco tool read multiple misfire code on #1, 2, 3 & 6 cylinder). Exhaust has white/blue smoke pouring out.

Multiple misfires usually are caused by a bad crank sensor, some times it can be a bad cam sensor but that usually does not go bad.

Will turn over but wont start

On the drivers side fuel rail there is a shrader valve port with a blue cap, touch the shrader valve and see if gas squirts out, you may get a little to begin with, the crank the car and test is again, if you have nothing the second time then you are either out of gas or the fuel pump has failed.
If you have fuel then the car could be flooded, this is a common issue with the early Jaguar v8's.
You would need to crank the car and half accelerate, then slowly push the pedal all the way (which shuts off the fuel believe it or not) then back to half way, keep fluttering the pedal and you can usually get it to run, but be careful as it will smoke once running.
There is usually not an issue with spark on these cars, the crank sensors never fail.

97 Bonneville wont crank

white smoke is an indication of a leaking headgasket. if this is the case the coolant could have fouled out the plugs

If there is a consent white smoke coming out your pipe what that mean, but no nosie from the engine it self, I have a 95 saturn

there are a few indications of your engines running condition.
water dripping from the tailpipe (depends on how much) can always be an indication of blown read gasket.
white smoke is usually an indication of the vehicle burning rich, or with too much fuel.
dark colored smoke is usually an indication of the vehicle burning oil, leaking down into the cylinder heads.

I have a 1997 Saturn SC2, it has an oil leak and is smoking bad

The smoke sounds like its burning off any oil accumulating in the exhaust, and only goes down to the point where the crankshaft stops splashing in the oilpan.

Would appreciate your help

It could be anything. Please describe "doesn't start", do you get power to you dash/headlights, etc? Does the starter wind up, and make a high whining sound. Does it crank very slowly, and die. Does it crank normally, but the engine refuses to fire?
