U have a worn bearing, called, throw out bearing , when pedal is depressed it separates the engine from the transmission allowing u to change gears. transmission will need to be separated from engine to replace, quite a job for front wheel drive . Also replace clutch and pressure plate at same time no matter unless still good when inspected by person who knows how a new plate looks. torque all bolts back to specs. Not for the unskilled. U will need equipment, shop, car lift , tools and parts. CV joints and wheel bearings/boots need to be inspected also.

Loud whine then knock in overdrive

well, without hearing the noise myself, i could guess that the torque converter clutch might be going bad. the torque converter is the part that transfers the power from the engine to the transmission via viscous fluid motion, the converter also has a clutch that internally provides a direct connection inside the converter for better fuel economy. but as with anything labeled as a clutch, it wears down to a point where is slips. the noise your hear could be the torque converter clutch slipping. i owned a 90 astro van with the same drivetrain that made a noise similar to what you speak of up hills. while driving up hills, fully depress the accelerator and if the clunking noise occurs, then the whine goes away as you accelerate faster in a lower gear, very likely this is the case. you would have to have a transmission shop diagnose further. i drove that old van for five more years cause i didn't want to pay to have transmission repaired. it can be very expensive.

2001 Dodge Grand Caravan. has been making a loud whining noise for about a week. started slipping last night. seems to get worse when going from a complete stop and when shifting into gears. other than...

MOST LIKELY HAS A PLUGGED TRANSMISSION FILTER.
TORQUE CONVERTOR CLUTCH FAILURE COMMON.
CHANGE TRANSMISSION FILTER AND ROAD TEST.
IF NOISE IS GONE AND RUNS NORMALLY, CHANGE TORQUE CONVERTOR AND RESEAL TRANSMISSION.

Makes a loud whining noise and is slipping when

Verify that your trans fluid is at the correct level. When if at all was the trans last serviced?

If fluid is low, try bringing it up to proper level with Valvoline ATF+4 fluid. You need to used either fluid from a dealer, or the valvoline brand which is approved by Dodge.

Gear shifting

Adust clutch cable.Test...start the car in first gear with clutch fully depressed, parking break off. Slowly release the clutch. determine when the vehicle starts to move. If clutch is fully depressed call that 100%, fully released is 0%. The vehicle should be moving at around the 55-45% range.

Clutch or Transmission?

Whining noise is worn gears or low on transmission fluid. It after reading your post, sorry to say but you were low on transmission fluid and your transmission needs to be replaced. You gear box has seized and every time you release the clutch even in neutral will kill your engine. The transmission shaft may have seized on the bearings in the transmission case, regardless you need a new or rebuilt transmission. Good luck friend and sorry for the bad news. Keep me posted.

1st, 3rd and 5th Gears all pop out of place + Whining noise

hi my name is nathan .......now...... what it sounds like is #1 (I have to hold it in place til I get to second gear) that can be that your shift linkage is worn or out of adjustment, pilot bushing is Badly worn, shift fork, lever and or shaft is bent or worn,or your bell housing is misaligned or just loose...i have a few more ideas on why it is jumping out but those are the main ones now about your whining gear noise#2( The whining sound starts low pitched in each gear then gets higher pitched as the rev's increase) you may have worn gears maybe or it could be just that your transmission lubricant is incorrect or inadequate.
