296 is not a valid code, I will assume it is a P0296, if that is not the case let me know. Code P0296 is triggered when the Power Train Control Module (PCM) detects that the acceleration rate of the crankshaft for Cylinder #12 was less than a calibrated amount. During normal conditions the PCM turns the Fuel Injectors ON and OFF in the Fuel Injection System.
SymptomsPossible sumptoms of OBD code P0296 - Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light) - Engine Misfire - Engine Run Rough - Low MPG
CausesPossible causes of OBD code P0296 - Fuel Injector #12 - Faulty or Corroded Fuel Injector #12 Connector - Plugged #12 Fuel Injector - Dirty #12 Fuel Injector
Possible Solutions- Clean Fuel Injector #12 Connector - Clean Fuel Injector #12 - Replaced Fuel Injector
There are three ways to reset a check engine light.
1. Disconnect the battery, wait approximately 30 minutes, reconnect the battery. This resets the cars
computer which also reset the check engine light. On newer OBD
(on-board diagnostic) compliant vehicles this usually does not work. See
step 2.
2. Reset using an OBD II reader. When you hook an OBD II code reader up to your vehicle, you can reset the computer using the code reader.
3. Fixing the problem. Generally the check engine light comes on for a
reason. Usually it is emission related (sensors, gas cap) or electrical
(faulty wiring). In this case the way to reset the check engine light is
to fix the problem
If the code you are mentioning is p1529 then it is generated by Transmission control module(TCM) to the trigger the check engine light . You have to check the code of your OBD port by using an scan tool that would give you the exact error codes from which the faulty part can be identified.
Check engine light will be triggered in case of any fault in any part in the car.Even a loose gas cap will trigger the check engine light. So having it scanned with an code reader connected to OBD port will help you to identify the exact fault.
That's easy. Just get an OBD-II compliant scanner. It will support 1996 and up vehicles that were required by law to have an OBD-II connector below the steering wheel under the dash board, in many cases.
Actron makes a good one for under $100. But other brands can be had for under $100 from Sears or Walmart.
Or, you could go to Autozone or Advance Auto Parts, for instance, and get it scanned for free.
Do you have a service engine soon light on?
Good luck on diagnosing and repairing the problem.

well first you must repair the problem that caused it to come on, u will have a trouble code stored, once the repair is completed the light will need to be cleared/turned off with a OBD 2 scanner.
The check engine is a fault indicator, it will stay on until the fault is fixed and a certain number of miles driven to check that the fix was successful, it can' t be reset, you can erase the code with either a OBD 2 scan tool, or in some cases by disconnecting the battery for 1 hour, but if the fault is not fixed the light will come back on in short order. Very seldom do you fell anything different unless the fault is transmission related.
