Well, if you are not leaking fluid everywhere it can only be 2 things, either the cylinder is not holding pressure internally or the pump is not making enough pressure. I would start by getting the cylinder rebuilt, this is common and usually cheaper than having the pump rebuilt.

SOURCE: Is the power steering pump in a chevy 1/2 ton 5.7

vladkov your an idiot power steering systems run on hydraulic power. The pump is driven by the engine with forces fluid through the gear and assists your steering efforts. I have changed my steering gear twice and my pump. There's nothin electronic about it. Steering assist is electronic and thats a whole diifferent ball game, it only comes on newer vehicles. Changing a p/s pump on a 98 chev is pretty simple, you just need a puller to pull the pulley off so you can get at the mounting bolts. Take those and your 2 lines off (making sure to mark which one goes where) and that's pretty much it.

There should be a bleeder valve on the cylinder itself somewhere. Otherwise with air in the system, Im surprised no hyd fluid came out the top of the cylinder!

SOURCE: I want a 1983 chevy Suburban repair manual 6.2 L

You can get the original GM dealer service manual from faxonautoliterature.com. It will have everything includung wiring diagrams in it. I've used them before and had excellent service.
If you are just looking for some help with your engine then Haynes has a Diesel Engine Repair Manual, part #10330 that is excellent for the 6.2 diesel. It's about $20 and covers the 6.2 and the 6.5. It includes a lot of tips that aren't in the GM book, especially up grades to some systems.
Hope this helps.

1998 chevy k2500. starts but dies.can hear fuel pump when key is turned on and it will start for about a second then dies.isnt keeping fuel flow

Fuel pump. Not cheap and you'll need to remove the bed to change it. Not hard to do. Remove bed bolts and just lift the driver side. If you jump right in it only takes about an hour.

enlarge_icon.gifenlarge_tooltip.gif Fig. Fig. 1: Electric fuel pump-TBI engines
  1. With the engine turned OFF , relieve the fuel pressure at the pressure regulator. Refer to the fuel relief procedure in this section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle on jackstands.
  4. Drain the fuel tank, then remove it.
  5. Using a hammer and a drift punch, drive the fuel lever sending device and pump assembly locking ring (located on top of the fuel tank) counterclockwise. Lift the assembly from the tank and remove the pump from the fuel lever sending device.
  6. Pull the pump up into the attaching hose while pulling it outward away from the bottom support. Be careful not to damage the rubber insulator and strainer during removal. After the pump assembly is clear of the bottom support, pull it out of the rubber connector.
  1. Connect the fuel pump to the hose.

Be careful that you don't fold or twist the strainer when installing the sending unit, or you'll restrict fuel flow.
  1. Install a new O-ring on the pump assembly and then position them into the fuel tank.
  2. Turn the locking ring clockwise until its tight.
  3. Install the fuel tank and connect the battery cable.
If you dont feel like dropping the tank and hassling with the hangers because they often break cut a hole in the bed of your truck over the tank where the fuel pump is but be careful not to hit the wires. dont cut the piece out completely cut it so you can pry it up to oneside

Need assistance ,restoring a bed 0n a 1954 1/2 ton chevy

faxonautoliterature lists a build manual for your truck for $30. I bought one for my 82 Chevy and it is a copyof the instructions for each station on the assembly line. Could be exactly what you are looking for. They also have the dealer service manual for under $50. Hope this helps.
