Hello Rick ,is it possible there was work done on it? ,jack up front end and see if the same thing happens,also , have one person turn wheel slowly while you watch it go left and right, is there any damage to "U" joints in front end

When you turn the steering wheel, the steering gear rotates the pitman arm which forces the relay rod to one side. The tie rods connect to the relay rod with the ball studs. The tie rods transfer the steering force to the wheels. Use the tie rods in toe adjustments. The tie rods are adjustable. The pitman arm support the relay rod. The idler arm pivots on a support attached to the frame rail and the ball stud attaches to the relay rod.
The 2 tie rod are threaded into the tube and secured with jam nuts. Right and left hand threads are used in order to permit the adjustment of toe.

Power Steering System Description and Operation (w/o Electro-Hydraulic Steering)
The hydraulic power steering pump is a constant displacement vane-type pump that provides hydraulic pressure and flow for the power steering gear. The hydraulic power steering pumps are either belt-driven or direct-drive, cam-driven.
The power steering fluid reservoir holds the power steering fluid and may be integral with the power steering pump or remotely located. The following locations are typical locations for the remote reservoir:
• Mounted to the front of the dash panel
• Mounted to the inner fender
• Mounted to a bracket on the engine
The 2 basic types of power steering gears are listed below:
• A recirculating ball system
• A rack and pinion system
In the recirculating ball system, a worm gear converts steering wheel movement to movement of a sector shaft. A pitman arm attached to the bottom of the sector shaft actually moves one tie rod and an intermediate rod move the other tie rod.
In the rack and pinion system, the rack and the pinion are the 2 components that convert steering wheel rotation to lateral movement. The steering shaft is attached to the pinion in the steering gear. The pinion rotates with the steering wheel. Gear teeth on the pinion mesh with the gear teeth on the rack. The rotating pinion moves the rack from side to side. The lateral action of the rack pushes and pulls the tie rods in order to change the direction of the vehicle's front wheels.
The power steering pressure hose connects the power steering pump union fitting to the power steering gear and allows pressurized power steering fluid to flow from the pump to the gear.
The power steering return hose returns fluid from the power steering gear back to the power steering fluid reservoir. The power steering return line may contain an integral fin-type or line-type power steering fluid cooler.
In a typical power steering system, a pump generates hydraulic pressure, causing fluid to flow, via the pressure hose, to the steering gear valve assembly. The steering gear valve assembly regulates the incoming fluid to the right and left chambers in order to assist in right and left turns.
Turning the steering wheel activates the valve assembly, which applies greater fluid pressure and flow to 1 side of the steering gear piston, and lower pressure and flow to the other side of the piston. The pressure assists the movement of the gear piston. Tie rods transfer this force to the front wheels, which turn the vehicle right or left.

2001 F150 4x4. Driverside wheel turns about 2 inches before engaging the other wheel. New tire rod ends inner and outer, new center link and new pitman arm. Truck has 4 inch suspension lift.

indicates that the spider gears in the diff have a slight wear in the thrust washers and the tooth clearance is at max limit
nothing to be overly concerned about as those gears ony work when turning a corner or differences in road surfaces between sides of wheels or in a bog situation

Removal & Installation

3.5L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Record the radio anti theft code data.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable Engine cover Accessory drive belts Idler pulley Crankshaft pulley Power steering pump pulley Belt tensioner pulley Upper and lower timing belt covers
  4. Support the engine with a floor jack and remove the engine mount.
  5. Rotate the engine to align the camshaft sprocket timing marks with the cylinder head cover timing marks.

  6. Remove or disconnect the following:

To install:
  1. Ensure that the engine is set to Top Dead Center (TDC).
  2. Prepare the auto tensioner for installation by compressing it in a vise and installing a retaining pin.
  3. Install the timing belt in the following order:
    1. Crankshaft sprocket
    2. Idler pulley
    3. Left bank exhaust camshaft sprocket
    4. Left bank intake camshaft sprocket
    5. Water pump pulley
    6. Right bank intake camshaft sprocket
    7. Right bank exhaust camshaft sprocket
    8. Tensioner pulley

  4. Install the auto tensioner. Do not remove the retaining pin at this time.
  5. Check that the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks are aligned correctly.
  6. Rotate the crankshaft 1 / 4 turn Counterclockwise .
  7. Rotate the crankshaft 1 / 4 turn Clockwise to return the engine to TDC.
  8. Loosen the tensioner pulley center bolt.
  9. Apply 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm) torque to the tensioner pulley as shown and tighten the center bolt to 32-41 ft. lbs. (43-55 Nm).

  10. Remove the auto tensioner retaining pin.
  11. Rotate the crankshaft 2 revolutions Clockwise , then wait 5 minutes for the auto tensioner to adjust.
  12. Measure the auto tensioner rod as shown. If the measurement is not 3.8-4.5 mm, then repeat the belt tensioning procedure.

  13. When the auto tensioner measurement is correct, install or connect the following:

    Engine mount Upper and lower timing belt covers Belt tensioner pulley Power steering pump pulley Crankshaft pulley Idler pulley Accessory drive belts Engine cover Negative battery cable
  14. Reprogram the radio anti theft codes.

    Removal & Installation

    3.8L Engine

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
    2. Record the radio anti theft code data.
    3. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
    4. Remove the drive belt. Remove the power steering pump. Remove the air conditioning compressor.
    5. Remove the alternator. Remove the drive belt idler. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Remove the water pump pulley. Remove the intake manifold.
    6. Remove the connector bracket from the left cylinder head cover. Disconnect the right ignition coil connector, condenser connector and remove the bracket.
    7. Remove the left cylinder head cover retaining bolts. Remove the cylinder head cover from the engine.
    8. Remove the right cylinder head cover retaining bolts. Remove the cylinder head cover from the engine.
    9. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the timing mark T of the lower timing chain cover.
    10. Check that the mark of the camshaft timing sprockets are in straight line positioning on the cylinder head surface. If not rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees. Do not rotate the engine counterclockwise.
    11. Remove the oil pan. Remove the crankshaft damper pulley. Remove the timing chain cover.
      NOTE Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the cylinder block, cylinder head and timing chain cover. Before removing the timing chain, mark the right and left timing chains with an identification mark based on the location of the sprocket because the identification mark on the chain for TDC can be erased.
    12. After compressing the timing chain tensioner, install a set pin. Remove the right cam to cam guide. Remove the right timing chain auto tensioner and timing chain tensioner arm.
    13. Remove the oil pump chain cover. Remove the oil pump chain tensioner assembly. Remove the oil pump chain guide. Remove the right timing chain.
    14. Remove the right timing chain guide. Remove the oil pump chain sprocket and oil pump chain. Remove the crankshaft sprocket, oil pump and camshaft drive gear.
    15. Remove the left cam to cam guide. Remove the left timing chain auto tensioner and timing chain tensioner arm. Remove the left timing chain.
    16. Remove the left timing chain guide. Remove the crankshaft sprocket and left camshaft drive. Remove the tensioner adapter assembly.

    To install:
    1. Check the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets for wear and damage, replace as required.
    2. Inspect the tensioner arm and chain guide for wear and damage, replace as required.
    3. Check that the tensioner pin moves smoothly when the ratchet pawl is released with a thin rod.
    4. The key of the crankshaft should be aligned with the timing mark of the timing chain cover. This indicates that the piston is at TDC on the compression stroke.
    5. Install the tensioner adapter assembly. Install the crankshaft sprocket and left camshaft drive.
    6. Install the left timing chain guide and torque the retaining bolts 14-18 ft. lbs.
    7. Install the left timing chain. Be sure to install the chain with no slack between the camshaft and the crankshaft (crankshaft sprocket, timing chain guide, exhaust camshaft sprocket, intake camshaft sprocket). The timing mark of each sprocket should be matched with the timing mark (color ink) of the timing chain at installation of the timing chain.

    8. Install the left timing chain tensioner arm and torque the retaining bolts 14-16 ft. lbs.
    9. Install the left timing chain tensioner and torque the retaining bolts 7-9 ft. lbs.
    10. Install the left cam to cam guide and torque the retaining bolts 7-9 ft. lbs.
    11. Install the crankshaft sprocket, oil pump and right camshaft drive.
    12. Install the oil pump chain and oil pump sprocket. Torque the retaining bolt to 14-16 ft. lbs.
    13. Install the right timing chain guide. Torque the retaining bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs.
    14. Install the right timing chain. Be sure to install the chain with no slack between the camshaft and the crankshaft (crankshaft sprocket, intake camshaft sprocket, exhaust camshaft sprocket). The timing mark of each sprocket should be matched with the timing mark (color ink) of the timing chain at installation of the timing chain.

    15. Install the right timing chain tensioner arm. Torque the retaining bolts to 14-17 ft. lbs.
    16. Install the right timing chain auto tensioner. Torque the retaining bolts to 7-9 ft. lbs.
    17. Install the right cam to cam guide and torque the retaining bolts to 7-9 ft. lbs.
    18. Install the oil pump chain guide. Torque the retaining bolts to 7-9 ft. lbs.
    19. Install the oil pump tensioner assembly. Torque the retaining bolts to 7-9 ft. lbs.
    20. Pull out the pins on both the left and right hydraulic tensioners. Install the oil pump chain cover.
    21. Rotate the crankshaft two revolutions in the clockwise direction. Confirm the timing mark. Be sure to rotate the crankshaft in the clockwise direction.
    22. Apply sealant on the chain cover and on the cylinder head, cylinder block, and lower oil pan. Be sure these parts are free of engine oil and dirt.
      NOTE Before assembling the timing chain cover, the liquid sealant TB1217H should be applied on the gap between the cylinder head and block. The part must be assembled with five minutes after the sealant is applied.

    23. Apply sealant on the chain cover.
      NOTE The liquid sealant TB1217H should be applied on the gap between the cylinder head and block. The part must be assembled with five minutes after the sealant is applied.

    24. Install a new gasket to the timing case cover.
      NOTE It is important that the dowel pins on the cylinder block and holes on the timing chain cover should be used as a reference in order to assemble the timing chain cover in the correct position.

    25. Install the timing chain cover. Torque the retaining bolts in the proper sequence and to specification. The engine should not be started for at least thirty minutes after timing chain cover assembly.

    26. Install the timing case cover oil seal.
    27. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.

Timing Belt Service 2002 Kia Sedona 3.5 liter

Removal

1. Remove the engine cover

2. Remove the drive bell.

3. Remove the idler pulley, crankshaft pulley, power steering pulley and tensioner

pulley.

4. Remove the upper and lower timing belt cover.

5. Support the engine with garage jack or special tool, and then remove the engine

mounting insulator.

Caution: Take care not to deform the engine oil pan.

6. Remove the auto tensioner.

Notice: Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and align the timing mark to get the No.1

cylinder's piston be in TðC position (compression stroke). At this time, the timing

marks of the camshaft sprocket and cylinder head cover should coincide with each

other.

Notice: When re-using timing bell, make sure of marking the rotating direction on

the belt so as to install correctly.

Installation

Method of installing timing bell and auto tensioner

1. Install the idler pulley to the engine support lower bracket.

2. Install the tensioner arm, shaft and plain washer to the cylinder block.

Tightening torque: 35 -55 Nm (350-550 kg-cm, 25.82 -40.57 ft. lbs.)

3. Install the crankshaft sprocket.

Notice: Confirm if timing marks coincide with.

Caution: Align the spacer with a pin, and assemble it exerting even force not to

deform the crankshaft sensing blade.

4. Install the camshaft sprocket. Align it like initial state as shown.

Caution: When installing camshaft sprocket, tighten the bolt holding hexagonal

part of camshaft to prevent it from tuning.

5. Install the auto tensioner to the oil pump case.

Caution: At this time the auto tensioner's set pin should be assembled completely.

6. Align the timing marks of each sprocket and install the timing bell, maintaining the

proper belt tension between each shaft in this order. Crankshaft sprocket -> Idler

pulley -> Left bank exhaust camshaft sprocket -> Left bank intake camshaft sprocket

-> Water pump pulley -> Right bank intake camshaft sprocket -> Right bank exhaust

camshaft sprocket -> Tensioner pulley.

Caution:

1 As a result of this, position of No.1 cylinder comes to compression TDC.

2 As each camshaft sprocket tends to rotate by itself, pay attention not to injure

fingers or other bodily part. Especially be careful with the right bank.

3 In case the right bank camshaft sprocket rotates excessively, be cautious not to

rotate more than the initial stable position. Always align timing mark of rotating

sprocket by turning it reversely. In this case, pay attention not to rotate It

reversely from the initial position. (if. with one sprocket fixed at No.1

compression TDC position, the other sprocket is rotated one revolution

clockwise or counterclockwise, then the intake and exhaust valve might intetfere

each other)

7. After installing the timing bell, exert the reverse directed force to the right bank

exhaust camshaft sprocket to give tension on the belt. Holding this state, recheck it

each timing mark is correctly positioned.

S. With tensioner pulley slightly pushing the belt down, tighten the center bolt

slightly.

9. Pull out the auto tensioner set pin


How to adjust timing belt tension

1. Tension setting (While auto tensioner is not operating: And set pin being kept

installed.).

1) After rotating crankshaft 1/4 revolution reversely, rotate it clockwise to position

No.1 cylinder at TDC. Then, loosen the center bolt and give the belt 50 kg-cm of

tension with tensioner pulley socket (Two pins are attached) and torque wrench.

While maintaining this state, tighten the center bolt to the standard torque.

Center bolt standard torque 43 - 55 Nm (430 - 550 kg-cm, 31.72 - 40.57 ft. lbs.)

2) Pull out the auto tensioner fixing pin.

2. How to check tension (While auto tensioner is operating: and fixing pin being

un-installed.)

1) After rotating crankshaft 2 revolutions clockwise to position No.1 cylinder at

TDC wait for about 5 minutes, and measure the amount of protruding of the auto

tensioner rod.

Caution: This is "leak down" time for the auto tensioner rod to protrude 1mm

when tension caused by rotation of the crankshaft has changed.

2) Check if the amount of rod protruding is in the range of 3.8 -4.5 mm.

3. Recheck if each sprocket is within the specified range.

Notice: ¡fit is not within the specified range, repeat from procedure 6 as service

procedure of timing bell and auto tensioner installation method. Refer to Timing

Belt; Service and Repair.

2004 chevy 1500 ext cab hard to turn right at low speeds

2004 chevy tahoe 4x4 had the same problem wont turn right at idle - like no power steering , has hydoboost brake steering system , did test and found steering box bad , removed box and remove the top cover on box 4 bolts at hydralic cover and removed and found spool valve has 4 seals 1 outer was blown i replaced box with reman from advance auto about $200.00 and flushed system , drove great problem solved .

Having problems turnning to the right. Steering

your ball joints are probbly need ing to be replaced on the right.your hub on the right could also be bad. we did have one truck where the 4x4 was not disenageing on one side so the truck always pulled to one die. where had to replace the 4x4 motor
