First we need to figure out what transmission you have. Crawl under the vehicle on the drivers side (be sure to chock your tires) and see if there is a black box on that side of the transmission. If so, then it is the 4L60E and there are many electronic parts that could be the culprit. Also while you're under there check and see if your shift linkage is hooked up, that will be on that same(drivers) side of the transmission. While your under there getting dirty, you could park the vehicle on level ground, chock the front wheels, jack up the entire rear of the vehicle and place it on jackstands. With the rear of the vehicle up in the air you could un-bolt the shift linkage and try to manually shift the transmission. If that works, you could have a broken shift linkage, or if you do have the 4L60E out may be that little black box where the shift linkage attaches to the transmission. Good luck and be careful!

There are to many things that can cause this problem, best thing to is go get the ECM scanned for DTC codes at a transmission shop or Auto zone or Parts Source since they scan for free.
The ECM should have DTC code in it's memory on how the transmission is Performing and have the Transmission line tested for Fluid pressure.
Good luck and hope this helps. Oh and also ways check with more then on transmission shop if there tell you that you need a new Transmission,
It could be a simple as the transmission filter falling off causing the lost of transmission fluid pressure. Check the transmission fluid too.

You will need a good manual that is focused on the transmission and possibly someone to lean over your shoulder to help you. Clean workspace is imperative. These are rather easy as you are for the most part stacking parts back into the housing when reassembling it. I would say look for a yard trans to put in it meanwhile and then you can learn at your leisure.

Before guessing at transmission problems, check the fluid level (car warmed up, engine running in Park on level ground) and have the PCM scanned for trouble codes FIRST.

Also note that many problems that show up as transmission issues are actually PCM or electrical, and may be external to the transmission.

Secondly, put a line pressure gauge ($55 shipped on Ebay, or visit a local trans shop) on the pressure test port and go for a drive to verify proper line pressure. Base pressure at idle in P,N,OD should be around 70psi and around 140psi in R. Max line pressure should be at least 190psi at WOT in 1st or 2nd, 225psi is optimum. If base pressure is low, trans or pump is worn out. If max pressure is low, check EPC solenoid. If reverse is slow to engage, and line pressure does not come up to at least 130psi in reverse, replace the boost valve with a Transgo 0.500" boost valve (easy fix in pan).

1-2 shift does not happen at WOT until you let off the gas: Best case: try replacing the TPS. Middle case: leak in the 2nd gear apply circuit (servo assembly or 1-2 accumulator). Double check by using the pressure gauge and watch for a big drop when the PCM commands 2nd gear. Worst case: poor line pressure rise.

1-2 Shift shudder at WOT; delayed or abnormal 1-2 shift; There's a problem ONLY on the 1-2 shift: 1-2 accumulator piston cracked or stuck cocked in the bore. Check the yellow spring inside the accumulator housing for breakage. Also, if the accumulator housing walls are scored, the housing must be replaced. Easy fix in the pan.

1-2 shift is delayed and harsh, may not shift into OD: Check TPS for smooth and linear electrical response over the entire range of motion. If not, replace.

Soft shifting, gradual performance degradation: Poor line pressure rise due to leaking boost valve, clogged EPC filter screen, failing EPC solenoid, or worst case: leaky seals throughout. Transgo HD2-C kit fixes first two without removing trans. Seal restorer may fix last problem, but probably R&R. Also try a transmission flush with BG brand products (Firestone stocks it).

Here are the common things that may be happening to your transmission to what you have described. As for your transmission fluid being burn, that is a sign that your transmission is slipping. Your going to have to service the transmission again fluid and filter changed. Since your doing that you may want to replace the boost valve and shift servo. I did mine on my 4L60E and have over 365,000 miles so far, replacing the boost valve every 60,000 mile and it's only $45.00 and take less the 5 min to replace and the servo is around the same price. I did do the upgrade and have the corvette boost valve and servo in my transmission which helps a lot. The other thing to is B&M has a electronic shift controlled modulator you can install your self which would give you 3 settings and works great with the upgrades mentioned above.

Good luck and hope this helps, keep me posted and try not to run the transmission too long with the burnt and dirty fluid. The dirt in the fluid will cause the electronic pressure control (EPC) valve to fail and will end up causing a $2,300.00 total transmission rebuilt over a simple $190.00 up grade and maintenance.

I bought a 92 Chev 2500 4X4 from a guy just recently. He said the tranny wont go into gear. I found the transfer case was in neutral. So i put it in gear and away it goes. But reverse seamed sluggish. ...

If your transmission is a 700r4 (4l60) you have a reverse band that engages when you want to go in reverse. since it drives forward your low reverse clutch and your fwd clutch are working. This leaves the band which was probably slipping now is not engaging.

Tranny trouble??

TRANSMISSION FLUIDS CAN BE CAUSED BY ONLY A COUPLE OF THINGS. MOST COMMON BEING A WORN OR BROKEN SEAL. THE TRANSMISSION SEALS ON MOST CARS ARE MADE FROM RUBBER OR METAL. BEING IN ALL KIND OF EXTREME TEMPS FOR YEARS ON END NOT TO MENTION THE PARTS MOVING AROUND THEM WILL EVENTUALLY CAUSE LEAKS. ALSO FAULTY INSTALLATION (OF A SEAL) CAN ALSO CAUSE A LEAK TO HAPPEN. THE ONLY OTHER THING THAT CAN CAUSE A LEAK TO MY KNOWLEGE WOULD BE IF YOU BOTTOMED OUT A CAR LOW ENOUGH THAT IT CAUSES DAMAGE TO THE TRANS CASE OR PAN. One cause of grinding when shifting into reverse is improper adjustment of the clutch linkage. If the adjustment is correct when the clutch is depressed the gears should stop turning and eliminate the grinding. Make sure there is some free play in the linkage when the clutch is not depressed. Most manual transmissions do not have a sychronized reverse gear. When you try to go into reverse from neutral, the transmission countershaft (which is linked to the pilot shaft) is still turning. The main shaft (which is linked to the tailshaft) is not turning. Therefore, since there is no sychronizer (or clutch brake like on a heavy truck tranny) the sliding cluctch gear (splined to the main shaft) grinds against the main shaft gear (floating over the main shaft but meshing its respecive countershaft gear through the reverse idler). The slider's function is to lock the main shaft gear to the main shaft thereby transmitting power to the rear wheels in the desired gear ratio (depending on which main shaft gear is locked to the main shaft). The way to cure this is to select a forward gear to stop the transmission and then go to reverse, all the while holding the clutch down. If it still won't go into gear you can either slip the clutch ever so slightly to "bump" the gears while gently pushing the stick into reverse (not too hard!! you can bend or break forks!! OUCH!!) or go into neutral, let the clutch all the way out, go into a forward gear and then reverse.

Tranny slips & wont shift past 2nd gear

Ok, you will need to first check the fluid level in this transmission. if the trans is sealed, you will need to take to the dealer for a fluid check. assuming that the fluid level is proper, this will usually be caused by a faulty transmission control module and faulty shift solenoids as well. these devices are located on and inside the trans and i recommend testing each device for flaws.

Most slips are the result of gear ware but, the solenoids and TCM will cuse this issue as well.

Slipping Trans - 2002 Honda Odyssey

Change the fluid. Since you only get about half of the fluid to drain during a change (the rest is held in the torque converter with no way to drain it), you will have to change the fluid three times in order to dilute the "dirty" fluid with enough clean fluid to make the end product mostly clean. Change the fluid, then run the car for awhile. Repeat two more times. And only use Honda fluid.
