This sounds like it could use a tune up. rough idle could be a sensor or poor ingintion.

SOURCE: rough idle, backfire on acceleration

check everything you can under the hood your air intake system all of it especially make sure all clamps are tight .. and make sure all vacuum hoses are good and not cracking or broken or just loose . you might run a little fuel cleaner through a tank of gas too cleaning the engine fuel system up some. just a few ideas.. Jerry

sounds more to me like your distributor cap and rotor are well worn i have seen this problem with the 98 dakotas as well as having this same problem on my 98 dakota

2004 kia rio has rough idle when cold. After engine reachs normal operting, engine stalls out and will not hold an idle. rating

All of this suggests bad sensors. I would check the engine codes and try again!

check the injectors and make sure there is fire on those plugs in 3 and 4

If you did the timing belt out of timing you would be complaining of back fire and rough idle,Take out the oxygen sensor (the front one) if this make a difference check your exhaust system you can be plugged

Did you ever find a solution to this? I am having the same issue on 2,4,6. I have replaced the coils. checked the intake for vacuum leaks. I am lost here let me know if you find anything and I will do the same.

Mine did this at one time, and it was only a bad plug wire. Give it a tune up and see if it works. 170k miles is awesome, I have 145k now and it runs great, but had to have ac replaced this week :( Good Luck!!
