Side Mirrors Why is both my side mirrors move all over the place when I start the ignition ?

  • Mark Struss
    Mark Struss Mar 31, 2014

This BMW remembers the settings for the mirrors, seats and steering wheel for each driver. These settings are saved to the particular key you use to start the car. For instance, if you use key number 2 to start the car, all settings will move to the #2 memory position. To set the memory, look at the buttons on the side of the driver seat. Once you have everything where you want it, press "M" and the red light will illuminate. Then press one of the buttons marked 1, 2 or 3. The settings will be saved to that number. If you are using key 1, save your settings to M1. Then, when you sart the car, everything will move to your defined settings.

Is there a preset option on this model if so you will have to set mirrors where you want them as it may be reseting to a previous setting , how long has this been happening ?

  • quinn lintorn-terry Mar 31, 2014

it does sound like the preset system is currently stuck in factory default mode: meaning wherever it feels like. i would look at your owners manual on how to reset your mirror preferences to your key and if that does not work take it back to BMW for them to make it reset

Mirror glass replacement on drivers side

i don't have aviator. here's explorer, should be the same.

You will see a small rectangle where the screwdriver goes in. You are pryingtowards glass. The retention is about a 3 inch rectangle that has a lip around it that snaps onto a rectangle on the mirror body.

  1. Remove the outside rear view mirror (17682).
    1. Disconnect the power mirror wiring clips.
    1. Remove the outside rear view mirror nuts.

      • Feed the power mirror wiring through the opening in the front door (20124).

Sideview mirrors dont move certain ways.

I researched the maintenance manual. The fuse you need to replace is fuse 20 in the under dash fuse box. It controls side windows, washer motor, rear view dim function, and possible seat memory. There are a couple that link to the mirrors, but this is the one for this problem.

Mirrors will not fold in.

It is a stuck motor. Water gives rust inside housing. Remove mirror and clean motor and components. This is a well known error for H2 mirrors.
