Is the battery light on the dash board working? If the light does not work the alternator will not charge, it needs the power from the light to energise the rotor.
Replace the large wire on the back of the alternator,with a new one,it comes off the back to the positive side of the battery,leave the old one on the alternator.
1.You need to install a Fully charged battery, before you install a new alternator. Otherwise it will burn the alternator up.
2.I read what you typed about installing a new battery. Was the new battery fully charged, and was it installed before the new alternator? No? See number 1 above.
Find a friend with a heated garage that you can use first off, then locate the short that may be causing all this. Unless you have a bad battery? If its more than 3 years old, replace it. Batterys are cheap. WALMART has em under 89 bucks for most vehicles.
