Torque wrench settings for a 1998 Toyota Rav4

Hi, I need the torque wrench settings for the sump bolts on the automatic transmission. Changed the transmission fluid and the torque settings were wrong in the Haynes mannual, 8 Nm, which i'm sure is wrong. Consequently, the gasket blew when it heated up and dumped all the fluid over a garage forecourt!
My friend who is doing the work has a data disc which said the settings are 5 Nm, so some clarafication is appreciated!

Many thanks.

It would seem that @ 8Nnm you were under the torque to properly seat the gasket and it blew out. Going down @ 5Nm may worsen the issue.
My manual lists 11Nm for many of the smaller bolts in the auto trans. Unless you believe that you over tightened and that's why it blew out?

Remember to evenly cross torque/tighten the bolts to get even seating. Did you use any sealant on one side of the gasket, that may help (only apply a small thin continuous sealent bead...this will help stop gasket movement and blowout)

Citreon xsara 1999 1.8 16 valve cylinder head torque settings

If yours is an Xu series engine, you need to use a torque wrench and an angle dial wrench. Tightening is in 3 stages.
  • Stage 1: Tighten up to 60Nm (44 lb/ft) then fully loosen
  • Stage 2: Tighten up to 20Nm (15lb/ft) change to angle dial wrench
  • Stage 3: Angle tighten to 300 deg.
To avoid confusion, do stage 3 in 3 steps, tighten 100 deg each round and repeating the cycle until 3 rounds.

What do I need to do to replace the automatic transmission filter?

Drop the tranny pan...(loosen the bolts). Be prepared to allow the fluid to come out/drip out. Then remove bolts, drop the pan, wipe the pan out. Remove the old gasket. Remove old filter. Install new filter. Install new gasket. Install the pan and tighten the bolts to the specified ft/lbs. torque with a torque wrench.

Honestly, it's the transmission...bring it a shop and have an exchange done. Because you won't get all of the old fluid out, and you might as well do the whole service. Hope this is helpful.

Torquing head

The 98 Corolla has a "torque-to-distance" spec.

First, torque all 10 bolts to 36 ft lbs (49 NM or 500kgf-cm), in a clockwise fashion, starting with the 2 center bolts.

Second, mark the bolts with a paint mark, and then torque each of the 10 bolts an additional 90 degrees.

Hope this helps, and thanks for choosing FixYa.
