Rack and pinion has major leak,what is most probable cause, how do i disassemble, when fluid is refilled the leak produces a pinkish color as if mixed with water What tools do you use to replace your rack and pinion or do it even need to be replaced if boot is leakin and my steering wheel is shakey

It needs replaced a rebuilt unit cost $350.00 and you need the tools to remove the tie rod ends and you have to unhook the steering wheel, if you have a hoist it's not to bad but a do it yourselfer it's a pretty big job, the fluid is that color because it's sucking air into the fluid because of the leak and the shaking is caused by one side not holding hydrolic pressure because of the leak and wore out inner tierod ends. If you do do it you need a whole lot more information and much more instructions to do it, afterwords it will have to be alingned, having done it before and having the proper air tools I can do one in three hours. You might take a week but it would be a learning experince.

No, no, it just can't. Only power steering fluid goes in and out of the rack and pinion. Transmission fluid travels through the cooler lines (a supply and return line) to the radiator or a separate cooler in front of the radiator. Check again. Is it transmission fluid or power steering fluid? Transmission fluid may be leaking onto the rack and pinion.
Most likely the seals on either the pump or the rack and pinion. Could be a leaking hose between the two. Might be a loose or leaking hose connection at the pump or at the rack and pinion. If you lose the fluid in a short period of time it shouldn't be to hard to find the leak, and you are also smelling it burn when it hits the the exhaust pipes. Refill the system and with the engine running have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth while you look at the pump, lines, and at each end of the rack and pinion. you WILL find the leak.
This is a rack and pinion leak which is for the steering...The only thing you can do is change the complete rack component to stop the leak.If it keeps leaking and you let it get low you can also cause the power steering pump to start leaking...This will cause major steering failure !
Some racks will leak slowly for a long time and may never get bad enough to swap for a new one but it is not worth taking the chance....But if you keep a close eye on it and cant afford to change it you can save the system by keeping fluid in it...It may not leak but maybe a pint every month..It is still the weakest link at the steering system....They are not cheap and neither is the labor......
However ....the new one comes loaded.

Hi, changed it 4 times?? what kind of mechanic do you go to? Anyway, I would say its not the pump at all, its probably the rack and pinion steering unit is bad. Can be replaced at home, but not a fun job, takes a bit of patience to get things out of the way. As for your A/C, does the compressor clutch kick on? If so, you probably need to discharge the A/C system and refill from zero psi. Air in the system will cause that. Get the refill kit with leak sealant and oil in the refill cans......Mike
Well don't know exactly what vehicle you are working on but it is very possible that if is a car then the inner seals on the rack-n-pinion are worn out causing the fluid to leak out. If it is the rack seals leaking then you will need to replace the rack-n-pinion. Good luck.
If that's the case then the oil seals of the rack and pinion should be replaced. If the seals are worn out it tends to leak and can definitely feel a loss of power. If it still leaks even after the replacement then the rack and pinion should be replaced.
There are instances that after oil seal replacement it still leaks it's because that the rack and pinion has severe damage.

What can commonly happen is the seals inside the rack and pinion and allows the fluid to fill the bellow boot(accordion boot). Take a small pick and poke the boot on the steering linkage. If fluid pours out, replace the rack and pinion unit and then have it aligned. If you need further instructions, feel free to let me know.
