While driving uphill on a mountain pass, the car seemed to hesitate or surge three different times. The next day, the car died coming off a freeway exit and wouldn't restart; wanted to, but wouldn't. The engine turns over, but won't start. The valves are turning. The fuel pump is pumping. Didn't test fuel pressure, but comes out strong. Sounds and smells like it's flooding. Check engine said catalytic converter. I think O2 sensor?

check engine light flashing usually means a misfire. i would have to to run a diagnostic check first. i would recommend getting it put on the computer at autozone (cause it's free) but i don't know for sure if they can run that year model. i know they run 96 and up. but you need to find out what cylinder is misfiring and i can almost bet you its a coil pack or injector. if autozone can't do it you'll have to call around to your local mechanic shops and find out who charges less to put it on a computer, usually $75 or more. i have one i would only charge you $50 but that doesn't do you any good lol.get back with me and let me know what you fid out.

JUST RELEASE THE PRESSURE AT THE FUEL PRESSURE TEST PORT ON THE FUEL SUPPLY RAIL THAT SUPPLIES THE INJECTORS, IT IS A METAL VALVE LIKE A TIRE VALVE, THAT IS THE FACTORY RECOMMENDED METHOD..
SOURCE: cranks but won't start fuel pump not coming on
put a small amount of fuel in the intake near the throttle plate then crank and see if it fires, if it does then it's a fuel problem, if it does not fire then pull a plug wire and put a philips head screw driver into the plug wire hold it 1/4 inch away from a good ground then have someone crank it over, you should see spark and it should be blue, if not then you have a ignition problem a bad coil or cam sensor but need to know what you found out on the two tests I told you first to give you a direction to go.
SOURCE: I want to remove the catalytic converter. How do
You cannot bypass the catalytic converter and expect the car to run properly and the check engine light to remain off. When you go to replace the cat, DO NOT attempt to use an aftermarket brand. Even many of the "OEM" aftermarket converters do not have sufficient back pressure and within 2 months they are ruined. I know, I have replaced mine that was purchased at Advance Auto Parts three times in the last six months! Shell out the money for an original Mazda converter. List is about $736.50, but you can find a dealer in Virginia that discounts them 20% down to $589.08. Just remember, the car's computer is programmed to read the O2 sensors' data and adjust accoringly. A new Mazda cat will allow your car to run like it did when it came off the assembly line, everything else equal.

Ok the fastest way to solve weather it is the cats in the exhaust system is to take it too a exhaust specialist and ask them to do a exhaust pressure test. They should have all the pressure drop data there and can tell you if there is to much restriction in the exhaust, if there is to much chances are they will be the cats, usually the front one. Yep your dad is correct with his theory, but excessive overfuelling will also cause the cats to build up excess heat and start to melt, or fall apart. So get a good service when your able too, plugs/filters and oils. Yep your firing order is correct.
