Four elements must be present for engine operation: 1. Fuel, 2. Air Flow, 3. Ignition (spark), 4. Cylinder Compression (assuming everything is in time/synchronized). Did the Check Engine light come ON? Whenever the "Check Engine" light comes on, there is always a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the ECM (Engine Control Module). You'll need an OBDII (On-Board-Diagnostics) scanner to retrieve any codes recorded/saved in ECM. Once you do this and let us know what it/they is/are, then perhaps we can help you. Otherwise, take/tow the vehicle into a Hyundai Service Center (dealership), pay the diagnostic fee. They will tell you EXACTLY what the problem is and what's needed to fix it (parts, labor, tax, time-frame, etc.).

My car is consuming too much fuel

Possible but not probable. Depends on how much "too much" fuel consumption to you is, and what other maintenance you have neglected. There are many, many reasons for poor fuel economy. Start with a good tune up then see how the fuel consumption is. Worn shocks may have some effect in that they wheels may often lose contact with the surface, spin excessively and thus, burn more fuel but this isn't a major factor in fuel consumption normally. It's more apt to be one of many other factors going on with your vehicle. Check and/or replace spark plugs, fuel injectors, air filter, PCV, oil & oil filter, and any other items recommended for your vehicle's scheduled maintenance for the mileage your vehicle has.

How to change engine oil filter

Get a new filter and oil from a local auto store. They will be able to provide you the appropriate filter. You will want to have everything needed before you do this so you won;t have to go running back and forth to the store with your car up on blocks (been there/done that).

Drain the engine oil by removing the drain plug on the oil pan.

Then remove the filter. The filter will unscrew by turning it counter clockwise. This may be difficult to turn and you may want to purchase a filter wrench to fit your filter before you start. Be aware some oil will still be in the filter and you will want to keep the filter upright as much as possible to prevent a big mess.

Before installing the new filter, dip a finger in oil and coat the rubber gasket at the top of the new filter to prevent problems removing it at the next oil change.

Install the filter by screwing it on in a clockwise manner. Once on snug the filter firmly into place by HAND. Do not use a filter wrench to install a filter, only to remove it.

Replace oil drain plug and refill with recommended amount of oil listed in manual (look up "capacities" in the manual).

Start and idle the motor for a few minutes and check for leaks. Turn the vehicle off, allow the oil to settle for a few minutes them check and ensure the oil level is within the safe level.

1997 mazda 626 won't start.

Are the plugs wet with fuel?
Check for spark. No spark? it may be the ignition module.

Plugs dry and spark present? No fuel?Spray a little starting fluid and see if it will run on that.
Then check pump fuses and for fuel pump noise.

Check engine light came on and car has trouble starting then when it starts and i take off it keeps jerking like it doesnt want to change gears

This could be as simple as replacing the fuel filter, when last time had service? Not oil change, slot of times if you don't make sure on oil change , places will only replace oil filter. I would change fuel filter and possibly air filter. Let me know, and bynthe way, fuel filter is cheap, there under 15 bucks most likely at napa, schucks , etc... Dealer a lot more $$ let me know, glad to help more if that does not solve issue, mike

How difficult is it to repair a rear seal leak on a 98 durango

Go buy a can of Berryman's Chemtool B-12 (Auto Zone, Rieley's, WalMart, etc.). Have tools, oil, filter and drain pan on hand for oil change. Warm engine to operating temperature. SLOWLY add can of Berryman's to crankcase of running engine through long funnel. Adding too quickly will kill idling engine, so go slow. After adding, replace oil filler cap and allow to fast idle (2000 rpm or less) for 30 minutes. Turn off engine and drain oil immediately. remove dirty oil filter. Let drain for 30 minutes. Replace plug, spin on new filter, add oil (do not overfill); start with 4 qts. and start briefly and then turn off. let stand for 20 minutes and check with dipstick. Add slowly to bring oil up to full mark; NOT ABOVE. You have just repaired your leaking rear main seal. Berryman's softens and expands rubber seals, stopping 95% of leaks caused by dried out rubber seals. DO NOT use this on cars/trucks that use the old fashioned rope seals. Ask a parts man what kind of seal a 98 Durango has. It washes the wax off the rope and it will leak worse than before. Ray (garage owner)
