No, there is no need for a differential for wheels that are not drive wheels. Differentials are reserved for driven wheels. Front wheel drive cars have a differential packed inside the transaxle case.

This sounds like the front hubs are trying to engage. This motor/4wd is real susceptable with vacuum problems. I let my oil get real dirty and it caused the low vac.The dealer performs vac test for front IWES (3c247) and found both of them leaking out of tolerance. This also caused damage on the splined contact points so they had to replace both front wheel hubs (1104)

Anyway, the vacuum supply for your front differential comes from the vacuum reservoir and the solenoids on the right fender apron. (see diagram)

Your friend is a little vague but almost right. This is due to lack of lubrication in the lower ball joints. Common issue. There is no way to fix other than replacement. the parts I am recomending are a little more pricey but do wonders and "FIX" the issue. They are called "Moog problem solvers". In my opinion of doing front end work over the years, Moog has some of the best products for issues with front end repair. Often correcting manufacturer issues!! Have the front end components inspected for wear and then replace the lower ball joints definately. Let me know if you need anything else.

Yes, it can be done, but it will be highly expensive as it will be necessary to replace the gearbox and the front axle and to add a transfer box , a cardan shaft and all the commands. In the end it will be cheaper to just sell your 2WD and buy a same year 4WD.

YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE ABS DIAGNOSED. IT IS MORE THAN LIKELY AN ELECTRICAL FAULT OR COMM PROBLEM. POSSIBLY ECU OR A SPEED SENSOR. MOST COMMON TRY TO REPLACE DIFFERENTIAL MOUNTED SENSOR ON REAR DIFFERENTIAL, MOUNTED RIGHT ON TOP OF DIFFERENTIAL,CAN'T MISS IT HAS WIRE GOINF TO TOP OF DIFF AND HAS 10MM BOLT HOLDING IT IN.
