INSTRUMENT PANEL GRAND AM 97 MY MILEGE, FUEL,TEMPERTURE GAUGES ALL STOPPED WORKING. I checked all fuses i could see.

  • Anonymous Apr 23, 2009

I have a 1997 grand am gt and most of the instrument guages don't work most of the time. Now and then they flicker and then start working all at the same time. I'm thinking that maybe its a ground problem behind the instrument cluster. Gas guage, temp guage, rpm guage. Speedometer does work. Anybody have any clues what I should check on? Thanks

This can be your Body Computer Mod. It is located on the right side under your dash. Usually black or gray box about 6'x6'x1' with the plugs. You can by new, but used are fine too. You will need your VIN # for either. Good luck

Fuel gauge does not work

The fuel sending unit is part of the fuel pump assembly so the first thing I would check is the fuse panel for a shorted fuse.
Next I would check for lose connections on the fuel pump assembly and the instrument cluster.
Hopefully theres a lose connection or you may have to change the pump assembly and they can get pricey.
Hope this helps

I have a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis Ls with a fuel gauge that does not work (gauge may be reversed)??? help please.

The fuel level indicating system is a magnetic type system, which consists of the sending unit located in the fuel tank, an anti-slosh module located on the back of the instrument cluster, and a fuel gauge located in the instrument cluster. The sending unit changes resistance according to the level of fuel in the fuel tank, which varies the current flow through the gauge. The pointer position varies proportionately to the current flow. In this system, the sending unit resistance is low (22 ohms) when the fuel level is low and high( 145 ohms) when the fuel level is high. The pointer of the magnetic gauge remains in position when the ignition is turned to the Off position. On some models, an anti-slosh module is used to dampen out fluctuating fuel signals from the sender. Some vehicles are equipped with a low fuel warning indicator. The anti-slosh module will also actuate the low fuel indicator when the fuel level in the tank reaches 1/16 to 1/8 full.

Do your other gauges/warning indicators work properly with the ignition on? If not, check for power at the fuse panel/fuses.

If they do then partially remove your cluster with connector still installed and check for voltage at cluster connector and gauge. Check continuity of cluster and gauge for ground.

Sometimes the anti-slosh module (if installed) goes bad in the Grand Marquis but not likely.

Sender troubleshooting:
  1. Perform test with resistors as follows:
    1. Disconnect wiring connector at sender unit, then connect resistor between gauge lead and a suitable ground.
    2. Turn ignition switch to On position.
    3. With 145 ohm resistor, the gauge pointer should contact the Full mark.
    4. With 22 ohm resistor, the gauge pointer should contact the Empty mark.
  1. Perform test with fuel sender of known quality as follows:
    1. Turn ignition to Off position.
    2. Disconnect wiring connector from sender and connect it to test sender.
    3. Move float rod away from fuel filter against Full stop position. Wait approximately 30 seconds, then turn ignition switch to On position. The gauge should read on or above the Full mark.
    4. Move float rod toward fuel filter against Empty stop position. Turn ignition switch to Off position. Wait approximately 30 seconds, then turn ignition switch to On position. The gauge should read on or below the Empty mark. If gauge works properly replace sender, which involves dropping fuel tank.

97 jeep grand cherokee, fuel gauge stopped working so i checked all fuses relays changed fuel pump(brand new)still the gauge dose not read what should i look in to next

did you change sending unit? that is what sends the signal of amount of fuel. if so then your gauge motor is worn. get a new cluster from wreckers. check all wiring for bad grounds

Guages not working,

If all voltages checked ok,then most probably its faulty instrument cluster board on which gauges are connected.Yes if cluster circuit board looks ok,then also it can be faulty.Somewhere there is minute short or burn on board then such prolem arises.
Also check the fuse box.One under hood and other under dash.Inspect each and every fuse and see if all are fine or not.

I just replaced fuel pump on my 99 pontiac grand

Anytime when there is multiple issues, I pick one system when the problem is ongoing, check voltage and ground.
The fuses in picture is for instrument cluster, Check for voltage at the fuses when problem is ongoing. Use a test lite. As you can see, one fuse is hot all the time, the other goes hot with the key on.

Gauges stopped working

Check the fuse in the fuse box, if that's ok check the wire harness that connects to the back of the instrument panel. Good luck and hope this helps.

Gauges don't work, Fuse panel is a pain to get at

I have a '97 Chevy 1500 with an automatic trans. This morning i started it up and the speedometer and tachometer needles sit at zero. Also the gear selector fails to light up. Upon accelerating from a stop, it starts in third gear. I can manually downshift to second but not to first. It will not upshift automatically. Only manually. Also, it will not shift into overdrive when up to speed. The check gauges light comes on but only intermittently.
Additionally, the service engine light came on however I suspect that this is a separate problem as the 262 engine does not run well on this horrible new 10% ethanol fuel and it makes it throw an O2 sensor code. Does anybody have a clue here? I changed the 10amp fuse for the gauges but it hasn't fixed the issue. I didn't think it would resolve it because the rest of the instrument panel works (oil pressure, temp, voltage, fuel). Please, any advice.

The right side of my instrument panel do not light up. I can not see the gauges for the fuel and temperture, All the gauges are working properly and I checked the fuses and theyn seem okay. So is there...

yes there is light bulbs behind the instrument panel easy job to do your self they just turn come out and put the new bulb in. also you will have to take your dash out it will have to bundels of wires in clips and one black thick wire from the back of it for the speedo that will clip in to
