I just bought my son a 1999 Toyota Celica SX.

Since this is a newly bought car, I strongly suggest that you replace the automatic transmission fluid and motor oil. Motor oil is for security purposes, to remove sludge just in case.
Regarding the transmission fluid, the fluid may be burnt that's why it makes some noise. This is common when fluid is burnt or old. Once the fluid is replaced, a smooth ride and shifting will be noticeable.

Your problem could be that your valves could be tapping and in need of adjustment if they can be adjusted.But since sound travels I would recommend you take it to your local mechanic to see if its possible for them to be adjusted.

look at what is left of the base, if there are two flats on the mast, put a small wrench or vise grip on it and unscrew it. buy a new mast at a parts store and screw it in the hole. if it is broken off totally then you are going to have to pull out the fender liner and replace the whole shooting match from underneath. generally the only hard part about that is removing the old liner hardware and snaking the wire inside the car and to the radio.
