The engine always runs at 1/4 on the temp gauge. Last night coming home, it kept going up to 1/2 then the fan would cut in and it went back to 1/4. It did this for about an hour. It's just been serviced and tested, they said the cambelt may soon need replacing, could they be connected??
A 1998 Malibu would not use a cam belt. But if it did the belt would not have any effect on your problem.
It sounds like the cooling system is low on liquid coolant. I would check the radiator and overflow tank COLD to make sure the radiator is full. Easy for someone to say everything was checked.
My experience with the chevy coolant system, cambelt/timing belt will probably not affect the temp. Never-mind what pseudo half wit wanna be mechanics tell you, trust me, they just want your money for work that doesn't need to be done. Start with getting a repair manual for your car, Clymer, et cetera, can be purchased in any Pep Boys, Advance Auto. First check for leaks, especially around timing belt area, which will mean faulty water pump, then and only then do you replace timing belt and water pump. If no noticeable leaking, check level. If that's fine, make sure anti freeze is appropriate mixture strength, lastly replace thermostat. Auto repair manual will tell you exactly what tools are required and level of difficulty in replacing thermostat. Fairly easy, but I have been doing it since birth. One more thing, if your car is within operational temperature standards, don't sweat it, it's an old car and they get weird with age!!!! Hope this helps! If problem persists after this, contact me personally!! Thank you!

PO172 means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a rich condition (too little oxygen in the exhaust). I would replace the thermostat first. The computer could be injecting too much fuel because it thinks it never gets to operating temperature. That may keep the light off.

When the service engine soon light is flashing there is a miss fire in the motor if you look in your owners manual it will tell you that. The same thing happend to me and it endid up to be the cat...

It sounds like u got a coil pack going out. Alot of times when your engine is cold or when you arn't putting a load on it the coils won't fail. How ever when the engine reaches operating temperatures and there is load on the coils that is when they are going to break down. my advice would be to get a scanner and see what cylinder the missfire is at then swwap that coil to another cylinder to verify that the coil is defective. If it is purchase another with a new spark plug put it in and let it rip.
