1998 dodge stratus stalls while driving if gas tank is half empty

Car will drive for awhile and then stall, has to sit and then will restart. Happens only when gas tank gets below half full. Replaced fuel pump, issue still occurring. Planning on trying crankshaft position sensor next and then onto MAF sensor. Any thoughts would be most appreciated! Thanks!

You need to check fuel pressure carefully. This happens when tank is so full of dirt that the pump screen gets clogged. After sitting down several minutes, some of the dirt settles and the car can be restarted, but happens again. Refrain from starting to change every sensor without knowing what is the real cause, because you could be thowing money and not fixing it. Aldo check pressure regulator is functioning correctly. If you can get a magnet....use it to pull it out...has to be a stong one....like on the back of a audio speaker. That's the part that's stuck right? Is there any part of it sticking out?

SOURCE: 1996 Dodge Stratus stalls when starting

I had this problem with my 99 Durango and went to AutoBeef.com to discover this was a major problem with 98 & 99 Durangos. The fix was easy -- PCM "brain" was exchanged with a refurbished PCM "brain" from an online PCM company in Florida. You can google as I can't remember name of company. I called them and they said - Yep this is the fix -- the guys told me 3 screws all I had gone to several mechanics and dealers -- none could figure it out. I was so grateful that someone gave me the clue I needed.

SOURCE: 2000 Dodge Intrepid with PO455 code and stalling.

A code 455 most likely one or more of the following has happened
a loose or bad gas cap
a non-conforming gas cap
other leaks or damage pieces in the evap system

Inspect the evap system for cracks or breaks in lines listen for vacume leaks or strong gas fume smell and fix all lines you find that are damaged ..I know you say you put a new gas cap but make sure it a conforming cap..Hope this helps

Testimonial: "Thank you!! I will def. tell my husband to check it out!! Thats the only code that comes up. So I hope this will help."

After getting gas car wants to stall

Sounds to me like the evap system. Which is the vacuum system that keeps the fuel tank from over pressurizing. The lines could be clogged or the solenoid could possibly be bad causing a loss of system pressure. Then when you restart the vehicle it would take a few minutes to build up pressure again.

Hi,
Very common symptom for a bad crankshaft position sensor. There is a testing procedure for the sensor, but it can give false readings or good readings while testing with engine off and cold. Usually they fail and give erratic reading when they get hot, but then it is virtually impossible to test. Kind of a catch 22. Replacement is fairly easy. They will sometimes give you a check engine light and subsequent code, but not always. I have had 3 cars do the same thing and it was the sensor each time, so if I were you, I would replace it and see if that helps before assuming there is another ignition or emissions problem.....Did you check your computer for trouble codes? Please reply if you have any and / or if you need instruction for do-it-yourself replacement....Mike

Car stalls when driving

Take notes , when this happens.
For instance : engine warm or cold , outside conditions (cold , hot) , car driven for a while , long or short distance when problem occures etc.... , that may help for diagnosis.
It very well may be temperature relaited , sience it has to sit (cool off) for 5 min.
Ignition coils sometime do that.
I'm mechanic shop owner and intermittent problems are the hardest one , so any piece of iformation on above mentioned events may give a clue.
Good luck.
Greg.

Have fuel pressure tested. This may sound dumb but has been know to work. When engine dies & won't start, carry a piece of cardboard or an old blanket with you, and a big rubber hammer, and get down behind car, and give the gas tank a good wack with the rubber hammer, and try to start it. If it works, you can bet you need a fuel pump. Either way, a fuel pressure test will confirm my & now your suspicions.
