I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L truck that will not shift. It is mainly in high gear and will stay in high gear as long as you are driving it. Sometimes when you start it, it will be stuck in low gear and will stay in low, but a lot of times you can turn the truck off and restart it and it will be back in high gear. I changed the fluid and filter and used the right fluid and have the right level.

sounds like inspection cover to trans hitting flexplate

Take a look at the down shift cable and make sure its not broken especially were it connects to the throttle linkage. And maybe try cleaning the electrical plug that plugs into the trans. Its about a 7 to 9 wire plug. They tend to collect water and short the wiring out.
